it shows desktop with no items and no task bar, start menu only the right click works. but doesnt display desktop properties and nothing else works. ctrl+alt+del also doesnt work and when i press F8 instead of regular boot menu i see a menu that says choose boot device fdd,cd rom,cd rw, hard disk

Sounds like you need to perform a windows restore. Theves pretty much everything in place, but refreshes Windows to a clean version.
Boot from the Windows XP cd, and after it has detected Windows is installed already, have it restore it. If will churn for a while making sure all is well. One note, you might need the updates again. good luck, should work.

i would try to either tap the f8 continuously or hold it down. you should see an option for safe mode and then you will be able to load a previously saved good configuration.
