Establish laws, enforce contracts, defend the country, and interfere in as few ways as possible.

what should they do and what they do are 2 different things. what they do, for as long as there had been civilized provinces with local government is tax the hell out of people. taxation is a good thing if the money is used properly as in iceland and denmark, which have extremely high tax rates but the people are content as the cost of living is reasonable, quality of life is high and the government pays for health care. here in the US it is abused and our tax dollars go to things like funding rediculous studies, paying high wages to goverment officials and thier personal expense accounts. congress votes on their own pay raises and still give themselves 10% - 12% every year even cutting benefits for the poor to do so. if you recall, pres. clinton gets his hair cut every month for $750, mine is $13 and looks better than his. the navy spent $350 on a hammer. I've seen military shows when I was in the navy called a wall of water, which is a squadron of f-18's releasing 500 lb bombs in tandem set to explode on impact at sea causing a big wall of water to come up, takes about 10 seconds and costs over $100,000. then there is the point of overseas relief which we spend billions. there is a phrase "doctor heal thyself" we don't spend our tax dollars on what's wrong with this country but we will send it overseas to feed starving children, there are plenty of starving children right here. history has taught us that people governed poorly will overthrow and change things but that hasn't happened here since the revolution.
