perhaps there's something deeper that is unresolved about this period in your life. talk to a shrink or perhaps look into hypno-therapy.
good luck with that.

I have insomnia, and I also have periodic episodes of nightmares. Some of them are recurring. I have found that when I have a recurring nightmare, it is because there is an issue in my life that I need to deal with right away. I don't have nightmares about things that have happened to me, necessarily, but I will have nightmares that recur over and over again, and that signals that something is on my mind that needs resolution right away.
The only thing that has helped me is talking it over with my therapist. Together, we brainstorm about the things that are going on in my life at the time, and usually, I have an "a-ha!" moment, and I figure out what is bothering me. Then, we work on whatever the issue is until it is either resolved or I at least feel better about it and more in control. That's when the nightmares stop.
I did actually once have to go to a sleep clinic at a local university because of recurring nightmares that I could not remember (I generally wake up during nightmares, so I am able to recall what they are about). After being assessed, I spoke to a psychiatrist who specializes in dream disorders, and he told me that recurring nightmares are almost always a sign of an unresolved issue for the dreamer. I asked if that was just for me, and he said it is the case in about 95% of people who have a recurring nightmare problem.
Since you allude to having had some bad experiences in the past, and since you say the nightmares deal with that period of your life specifically, my guess would be that you need to talk to someone about it to get some resolution or a better understanding of the situation. You don't say if you ever had counseling for the bad things that happened, and if you didn't, that would just make it seem even more likely to be the culprit to me.
I really encourage you to do some talk therapy with someone. You need to find someone you can trust and tell them about what happened 5 years ago, and about what is happening now. It sounds like there are issues you need to get out in the open and work on.
You could talk to a clergyman of some sort, a school counselor, or a regular therapist. The main thing is you probably need to talk to someone who has some training so that they know the best way to help you.
If you don't have insurance, or if cost is an issue, check out local resources. Many churches offer counseling centers staffed by people with training. Also, most communities have some mental health resources for people who need help but cannot pay. Look into what you can or cannot afford, and then find someone who can help you.
I really wish you the best. I know how awful it is to wake up and feel like you have spent the night in some sort of torture chamber.
Be well.

Write out every detail of what happened when the nightmares FIRST started..... The write out everything about the nightmare, next write out everything going on in your life as of now or when you started having them again. Compare them to each other.... Maybe a co-worker or if your in school maybe a friend is treating you away that your subconscious connects with an old memory triggering your dreams to come back. Also look into your dreams for things that can be interpreted to fit the situation.... After you write it out and tell yourself before bed OK I am going to dream about ...................... whatever it is most likely because you made yourself aware before going to sleep your mind won't wonder into those depths again.

Try writing in a journal. Set aside 15 minutes before you go to bed each night, and write about anything that might be bothering you or weighing on your mind. It might take some time, but after awhile, you'll see a difference.
Not trying to sound rude, but have you ever thought about going to see a therapist? You may have some repressed memories as well, and a therapist can teach you how to deal with these emotions. Just a suggestion.
Good luck and hang in there!
