There is probably some source of stress on your mind lately that your brain is translating into nightmares while you sleep. If you can reduce the amount of stress, or find a way to eliminate the problem that is causing the stress, you will eliminate the nightmares. If you can't eliminate the problem, find something to do to relieve the stress of it before you go to bed. (bike ride, walks, long bath/shower, call a friend, whatever takes your mind off of the problem for a bit.)

First nightmares have 3 primary causes. Stress, impropper digestion, scary movies. The first two are easy to address. Don't eat pizza before bed. And if the nightmare relates to a movie you have seen there you go. You may want to watch a few cartoons after the movie to take your mind off it.

As far as stress, it can be family problems or work, or even repressed memories. I had a few resurfface at age 21 several years ago. Quite traumatic. Stay away from those dream interpreters. Go for someone with a degree on the wall if you think you need counsoling.

i have em bad too. i can't prevent them, per se. although, i find they are due to stress, so talk out what is bothering you or deal with it. but when i get em, i force myself awake, and go to the bathroom. then i shake off the bad thoughts. you know, get them out of my head and don't let them back in. sounds dumb, but it works for me. and i have awful, blood filled nightmares. sometimes, i read or watch TV to clear my head too.
