It shouldn't need to go away. It's like building a new highway bridge. You build the new one while the old one is still running, then switch everyone over to the new one.

do you really think, with the massive networks of information that is REQUIRED to be sent over the net every day, that it would or even could, be shutdown? the decentralized nature of the internet makes it almost impossible (servers all over the planet) unless of course we go into a nuclear winter or something, but then the internet is the least of our worries at that point. Having that out there, different protocols are being put into effect, because we are slowly (or quickly depending on your veiw) running out of IP addresses. and IPv6 is the new protocol for the net, and computers have been capable of having ipv6 since XP (possibly before IDK) it wasnt the protocol of the web. SO, it wont be away, it would cost the world too much money to shut off the internet (if it were possible)
