T-shirts are relatively cheap in comparison to other forms of advertising (mail, billboards, newspapers, etc.). One half page ad in our local newspaper on a Sunday cost $6400 and it gets sent to 50,000 people. $6400 divided by 50,000 = $0.128 per person your ad will reach. The average t-shirt will cost around $5. The average person will wear 1 t shirt 40 times in a year for 5 years and come into contact with 30 people per day. 40 x 5 x 30 = 6,000 people. $5 divided by 6000 = $0.00083 per person your ad will reach.

The above analysis is if you pay for the shirts and give them away, but in most cases you can sponser an event, placing the event on the front of the shirt and your logo on the back. In turn, you can sell the shirts for perhaps $10 each. Now you made $5 per shirt, which hopefully covers your sponsorship and you have advertising that will be seen by thousands for years to come at no cost to you.

My brother owns a screen printing and embroidery business and he gives customers a discount to put his logo on the back of their one sided shirt design. He sees on average his logo 7 times each day on people's shirts. I have personally seen his logo as far away as 500 miles from where his business is located.

He has proven that 20% of his business comes from referrals directly from his logo placement onto shirts. That is a pretty powerful argument for the use of t-shirts in advertising.
