You want to make the fractions have the same denominator.

First, find the least common factor for each denominator.
14: 7x2 or 1x14
5: 1x5 -------Both have a factor of one--------

14x5= 70
now you cross multiply to get an equal fraction.
1/5=x/70 x=14/70 (1x14)
3/14=x/70 x= 15/70 (3x14)

3/14 is bigger than 1/5.

To do this, you have to make both fractions equivalent. This means that both fractions must have the SAME or COMMON denominator. The denominator is the number below the line, the numerator is the number above the line and simply the line is called the vinculum.

So, to make the denominator common, you multiply them together. So therefore, the common denominator is 70. Remember this rule, "Whatever you do to the top you must do to the bottom. Vice Versa".

So you multiplied the 14 by 5 (or 14 x 5). Because of that, you must multiply the 3 by 5. So now you get 15/70. Do the same for the other fraction. You multiplied the 5 by 14 (or 5 x 14) . Because of that you must multiply 1 by 14 (or 1 x 14). So it becomes 14/70.

15/70 is bigger. Therefore 3/14 is bigger than 1/5.

Remember this. You must always express your answer in the form that the question was in. So for example, don't say 15/70 is bigger than 1/5. You must say 3/14 is bigger than 1/5. GOOD LUCK!

You need to make them both have a common denominator (bottom number)so you can compare them.
What number can both 14 and 5 go into evenly? This is called a common multiple
You need to start multiplying the larger number (14) by 2, 3,4 etc until you find a number that 5 also can evenly go into.
The least common multiple is 70. 14X5
Now you change your fractions so they are both over 70

3/14 = ?/70 Because you had to multiply 14 X5 to get 70
for the denominator, you need to do the same
for the top number or numerator. so
3 X 5 = 15 so 3/14 = 15/70

do the same for 1/5

change it to be ?/70. Since you need to multiply 5 X 14 to get 70, you need to do the same for the top number which is 1. So 1 X 14 = 14 so 1/5 becomes 14/70

Now you can compare

What is bigger? 3/14 = 15/70 or
1/5 = 14/70

hi,

the best way is to make the denominators of the two fractions the same, that way you can make a comparison. the trick is to find the right numbers to multiply by to get both fractions to have the same denominator.

if you multiply 3/14 by 5/5 you have

(3*5) / (14*5) = 15 / 70

now, if you multiply 1/5 by 14/14 you have

(1*5) / (5*14) = 5 / 70

since 15/70 > 5/70 we now know that 3/14 > 1/5.

First you give them the same denominator by finding out the LCM of 14 and 5.
LCM = 14 x 5 = 70

now you cross multiply to get an equal fraction.
1/5=14/70 (1x14)
3/14= 15/70 (3x5)

So 3/14 is bigger than 1/5.

Let's make equivalent fractions out of these fractions. If the denominator is 70, then 3x5=15 and 1x14=14. 3/14 is equal to 15/70 and 1/5 is equal to 14/70. Which one is bigger?

3/14...the easiest way would be to make both the numerators [the number on top..i guess you know that but in case] same. so 3/14 stays 3/14 and 1/15 becomes 3/45. now see which denominator [# on the bottom] is SMALLER. 14>45, thus, 3/14 is bigger than 3/45. if you are confused how this works, ask your mom or teacher. They'll be happy to help!

Ashley..
You have to have a "Common denominator (a number that will multiply or divide both other denominators.. (SO.. 14 X 5 = 60) Next multiply each numerator by the same number that the denominator was multiplied by...for 14 it was 5...5X3=15.. for 5 it was 14 14X1=14..

Now you tell me..Which is larger?
sure the 15 OR 3/14 got it? ; -)

3/14 is bigger.
There are a few good ways to figure this out. The easy way is: 3 divided by 14 = .214, while 1 divided by 5 is only .20
