What is bigger 3/14 or 1/5

You need to start multiplying the larger number (14) by 2, 3,4 etc until you find a number that 5 also can evenly go into.

the best way is to make the denominators of the two fractions the same, that way you can make a comparison. the trick is to find the right numbers to multiply by to get both fractions to have the same denominator.

if you multiply 3/14 by 5/5 you have

(3*5) / (14*5) = 15 / 70

now, if you multiply 1/5 by 14/14 you have

(1*5) / (5*14) = 5 / 70

since 15/70 > 5/70 we now know that 3/14 > 1/5.

You have to have a "Common denominator (a number that will multiply or divide both other denominators.. (SO.. 14 X 5 = 60) Next multiply each numerator by the same number that the denominator was multiplied by...for 14 it was 5...5X3=15.. for 5 it was 14 14X1=14..
