I've just been reading various posts for baby names and got to wondering what nick names people had as children or give their children now.

My name is Rhiannon, and since I can remember my dad has always called me "Fred". I have no idea where it originated from, and no one else on the planet has ever been allowed to call me that in the 21 years I have walked this earth! My 16yr old sister Sheridan somehow got lumped with "Ferret", also by my well-meaning and ever loving dad. My 13yr old sister faired the luckiest with the nick name "Possum" or "Poss".

I just find it strange how some people give thier kids nick names like the ones my dad bestowed upon us. I'm just bored and curious and wondering what goes through people's minds when they name thier children...

My brothers and I always were called by our names, but my dad gave us each a nickname. Mine was Possum because I always slept late. My big brother was Booger Bear and my little brother was Bozo.

Nicknames are usually terms of endearment. My charming sister always called me pen**, because when I was 12 I would turn red as a beet whenever I heard that word. I just called her jackass, she didnt seem to mind .
But in NORMAL situations, nicknames come from the way a person may do something, a way they may look, an attribute, a habit, or their name rhymes with something.
I go through the trouble of finding witty names for all my pets, and then call them half a dozen nicknames according to their habits.

My dad has called me Sis since I was born...which later developed into Sisser, Frisser, Sisser Frisser, and Sisser Friss. I don't know what to say...wacky parents!!:) I know that a lot of kids' nick names come from an older or younger sibling(s) not being able to pronounce it when the kids are little, and then it sticks.

My parents named me Laken. But they call me Sarah (middle name) My husband calls me Sari

As for my child, (due anytime) her name is going to be Jayden Amelia. My husband is already calling her Jay, Den, JD. It just kind of works out.

Maybe your dad thought that those were good names, therefore he gave you those nicknames. Nicknames are a really big thing in my family. Every single person has one and they aren't even there real names.

People in general get nicknames because of what they do, their habits, personalities, how they may look, or they just might get called something that they remind other people of or matches with them or their name. Also people get nicknames because a little brother, sister or cousin might not be able to pronounce the name, so they go with a name that they can pronounce.

My name is Cynthia
My parents call me "Cyndi" for short
My friends call me "Girlie" because of how I look
My husband calls me "Egghead" sometimes besides "babe" because of my head shape

My husband's name is Rafael
His parents call him "Junior" because he's a Jr.
Family & friends call him "Romeo" or "Rome" because he was a flirt when he was young & he had aot of girlfriends.
I call him "babe"

My 4 year old daughter's name is Brianette: Bri-ah-net
Everyone calls her "Briana" or "Bri" for short

My 2 1/2 year old daughter's name is Yaniah: Ya-nai-ah
We all call her "Niah" for short

My 1 year old sons name is Jaiel
We left him with the name because its short but-
My mom calls him "Gordo" which means (fat) or "Prieto" which means (dark) in spanish
My husband calls him by his name "Jaiel"
I call him by his name too but sometimes I call him "Fatboy" because he's a chunky 1 year old and so cute.

My sister's name is Catherine
We "the family" calls her "Janet" because her middle name is "Janette"
Her friends call her "Cathy" they use to call her "Kit Kat" though- I guess bcause her name

I can keep going & going because its a big list but everyone gets a nickname within time. Everyone always try to make names short.

I love nicknames and i think they describe a unique personality and mean more when given by a loved one. My dad bestowed upon me the nickname Grace or Gracie b/c that is the meaning of my name, and I am by no means very Graceful. my friends gave me the nickname megs or meggers and one gave me the nickname meggerilla way back in middle school. i dont mind any of them actually. its whatever u choose but remember u wont be the only one choosing nicknames once your child is in school!

My mom named me Kathleen so that she could call me "Katie" which was what she always wanted to be called when she was growing up (her name is also Kathleen, but she has always been called Kathy). My dad has always called me Kate, just as my grandfather has always called my mom Kate. My younger sister's name is Heather (which there really is no nickname for), but when she was a baby I guess I couldn't quite pronounce it so I always called her "Hedder Baby". She is almost 25, and gets very upset when I call her that now, which I do every so often to tease her.
