When I was in college I couldn't study at my apartment. I used to go to the student union, a fast food place, or to crowed places on campus. I need noise to concentrate. It's been years, and I never had a problem working at work. I was happy working with from my cubicle with lots of people walking by, and people making noise around me. But I got to a point where I made enough contacts to stop working for a company, I recently quit my job, and began working from home. Work so far had been great, many people keep sending me work, but I just can't seem to concentrate, there's no noise here. I try the TV, but that only distracts me, and keeps me from working. Knowing I'm on my computer, I just keep wasting time on the Messenger, Youtube, and Wikipedia. I need to concentrate, and I can't do it here at home. I need to find a solution, otherwise me working from home might not work out.

from your story i could imagine you are no longer a young person without discipline. if you want to concentrate, then concentrate and add focus also on that. think about your clients and the job and the commitment on hand. think about the pay when you're done with a certain job. if you can't focus enough, if you have some plants, get a break and water your plants and while you're doing that...talk to yourself and say,"I have to finish that one, then I will do the next one...then I'm done...I will just work until -set your time here- then stop working when the time you set came...then talk to yourself again...until it become comfortable for you to work with or without noise. the most important thing is that you know, you are the only one you will talk to, and you are the one that will discipline you, nobody else..you are your boss and your supervisor ....i'm in the same boat...i work at home too....before, i can't work w/o the tv on because i don't want to miss my fav...but after awhile...i don't produce, i have no sale........so i decided to forget the tv...i have to work. period.
i hope you get the point.

I hesitate to answer your question by suggesting you visit another web site BUT, this is a really good article with links to help block out distractions while you are working.

In general I find lifehacker to be a wonderful site to GTD (Get Things Done).

Personally I can't have the TV because it is distracting but use Internet Radio to provide the background noise I need. I have used finetune.com and pandora.com successfully and they are pretty customizable. I also have my collection of Brian Eno, Zero 7, The Filters, and the Postal Service to keep me working all night (which is a problem when I have to be up in about six hours).

Good Night and good luck,

Michael

You could actually make more $$ and run a daycare at your house while working. I'm sure that's probably not the answer you were looking for.
