A friend lives in LA, a friend lives in San Fran. They want to meet for a weekend (driving distance). What is a good destination somewhere in the middle? But not Santa Barbara b/c the weekend we want, al the hotels are completely booked. Looking for pretty town on the coast with outdoor activities (light bike riding), quaint restaurants, a nice hotel. Any suggestions?

All of the above are great. Cambria and San Simeon are really near each other. In San Simeon you will find the famous Hearst Castle which has a wide variety of tours, depending on your interest. I would recommend getting tickets ahead of time if you are interested in that. Cambria is an adorable town and a great place to taste some amazing wine. There is a fantastic little place where tiny wineries, without their own tasting room, have their wines available to taste. I highly recommend it: http://www.fermentations.com/.
San Luis Obispo is also pretty close and is a really fun college town. There is a decent bar called The Library, which gives new meaning to "I was at the library all night!" Very fun, especially if these are college friends and you want to reminisce about old times. =)

I would probably do San Luis Obispo. My best friend from San Diego and I do that all the time. We used to go to college there and it is about halfway between us. You can do little trips to San Simeon, Cambria, Pismo. There is also great wine tasting in Paso Robles etc. SLO is a college town, with lots of shopping, restaurants etc. the only weekends to avoid are Cal Poly's Open House on April 19 - 21 and Graduation Weekend June 16th. Those weekends are usually crazy busy.

San Simeon!!!! It's along the Pacific coast of San Luis Obispo County, California.

Its position along Cabrillo Hwy is almost precisely halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco, each of those towns being roughly 230 miles away.

A key feature of the area is a large, well-appointed, and very conspicuous hill-top mansion, known as Hearst Castle, built by William Randolph Hearst early in the 20th century, which for many years has been a very popular tourist attraction.

There are fun bed & breakfasts there along the coast and it's very rural. Plus the castle is fantastic to see and the #1 movie of all time, Citizen Kane, was based on the character of William Randolph Hearst.

Good luck and enjoy!!

I definitely would recommend it!!

Monterey/Carmel area.

Your LA friend would have a farther drive, but lots of things to do and very scenic. I love Pacific Grove.
