According to the media, Cho was on antidepressents when he killed 32 people. This is not an isolated case. In japan for example, there are reports of children jumping off windows, committing suicide, killing, etc. and this is world wide.

I am sick and tired of people calling for gun control and not focusing on the real problem: PSYCHOTROPIC DRUGS ARE KILLING PEOPLE. HOW ABOUT INSTEAD WE HAVE DRUG CONTROL!

Guns don't kills people and drugs don't kill people. People kill other people. Psychotropic drugs save the lives of millions of people when correctly used. I doubt if any kind of medication could have been to blame for what happened at the Virginia Tech. It is obvious from all accounts that the shooter was a very troubled young man (with or without medication) and it will probably emerge in the investigation that his emotional problems are located in his family and go pretty far back.

From what I understand now, he was NOT taking medication and although there can be problems with some medications, because it takes a long time for them to work...they don't work immediately, there are many that are not dangerous.

Many people who have been diagnosed as suffering from a mental illness and need medication often can feel as though they are ok, when the medication, over a period of time, has kicked in and is working. So much so that the person simply quits taking the medication and that's when they get into trouble.

Others stop taking it because they have side effects that are difficult to deal with or make them feel uncomfortable.

Good Diagnosis and subsequent drug therapy is not an easy thing and one might have to shop around to find the right "fit" of both Pyschiatrist & Therapist.

The great problem that we face here is that it's often difficult for those who have no prior experience to understand what's really happening to their loved one and even when that loved one is diagnosed there isn't always much help because the law is specific in that if you do not want to be treated, if you do not want to take medication you cannot be forced to unless you have been "acting out" in other words you have been violent.

You don't really have the right to "Get Well".

This is ridiculous at best because the law is saying that you have the "Right to refuse treatment" but if you are seriously mentally ill and have lost the ability to reason, how could you possibly be able to refuse treatment if you are not sane?

Not only that but Hospitals are closing all over the country and there just are not enough community centers (there were supposed to be but the money never came through) to do the real work.

So....quite a few mentally ill folks are out on the streets or back with their folks and that also includes the very tiny percentage who are violent too.

I know these things because my brother, sad to say, lies 6 feet under because he never made it.

Guns don't make people murder - but the prisons & death rows are full of people who took certain drugs..like Prozak , which , according to expert testimony , are proven to induce violent behavior or suicide in those who had unrelated mental conditions . We do know that it is dangerous for anyone who is on certain medications to suddenly stop them without a gradual tapering down . Yet , courts play God and ignore the evidence . Instead of the drug companies loosing money that could go to certain political campaigns..this way ..the prison system gets more $$ ; and those cells get filled by more victims of these drugs ..and liberal courts . MOST of student school shootings all have one thing in common : prescribed drugs that induce violence / and / or suicide in those who had none of those symptoms before using those prescribed drugs . When liberal democrats capitalize on tragedy - rather than focus on the real issue- simply to push their gun control laws - to disarm a mainly law-abiding public - school shootings will continue to plague us . Bomb threats at Virginia Tech were not taken seriously by liberal dominated educators . The first attack on the WTC - by bombing was not seen as a major threat by a liberal White House ..What's wrong with this picture ? Blame guns but ignore bombings ?????

I have been watching most of the stuff on the killer today, and no one said he was on antidepressants. They did have one of his teachers on TV who said he seemed depressed and that the stuff he was writing in class was so dark that she recommended he see the school therapist, but he didn't. She even offered to go with him.

Psychotropic drugs are currently saving my daughter's life. Do you really know of someone whose life has been ruined by these medications?
Usually a problem occurs when the person doesn't take the medication like he's supposed to. Then they gripe and blame their problems on the drugs.

These people were on drugs because they already had a problem.......maybe these drugs just weren't strong enough - what about the people who never seek help - all you ever hear is "oh they were such a nice person, I wouldn't have ever thought they would do this" either you're crazy or not - the being on antidepressants is not to blame - blame their parents for screwing them up when they were children!!!!!!

It is not unusual for a person with severe problems to take antidepressants. Nor is it unheard-of for antidepressant therapy to be ineffective.
This doesn't mean the antidepressants caused the problem.

I sure hope the pharmaceutical companies are happy. They push these pills on people, but pills can never replace therapy. Pills cannot get inside your mind and talk to you about why you have these feelings of hate and hopelessness.

Someone knew this kid needed help, but instead of the help he needed they just tossed a bottle of pills at him. It doesn't take a crazy person to know that pills and crazy people just don't mix!

I tend to agree with you. viewpoint. Seems every horrific crime has a suspect who was taking anti-depressants.

Maybe the doctors who prescribe them to the extent it creates violent behavior should be charged with abusive scripting of drug prescriptions.

Neither guns nor drugs are the root of problem.
The problem is Law: "the ministration of Death".

Yea, drugs don't help. AT ALL. But people take them regardless not realizing that they're really sugar pills and the creators are only interested in your money.
