LOL, your not a freak or anything.
This also happens to me.
Another thing that happens to me when I lay down is that my whole body will feel like it is melting (for lack of a better word)
It feels really, really weird.

While your body is at rest, it still rejuvenates itself. You don't have to be asleep to regenerate strength, just let your body rest. Many people feel the same experience as you did, not really sleeping, but when you got up after a few minutes you feel refreshed. Some people refer to this as a 'cat nap', short time period and jump started afterwards. You're lucky in many ways that your body doesn't require much time to regain energy. You are not a freak. I would encourage you to get this to occur more often. It is a good tool to have in your "how to" toolbox to keeping your body energized with little time to spare. It's a gift. I used just this technique when I was a college student.

It happens all the time I work graveyard and I lose the track of time. Like today I went to sleep at 3PM and got up at 7:45 and I thought it was AM because it was still light out side.

Yeah and I've even had it happen where when I woke up I thought I was late for something because I was sure I had slept so long and went running out the door.

oh my gosh! That happens to me all the time...especially when you lay down for a cat nap and you know you have been awake but it feels like you have slept your day away and you get up and it is just shortly after you just laid down..it is freaky but it really does happen all the time

I would call it a cat nap. Sometimes I will lay down for 15 minutes and relax into a dream.
