If you're powering the undergravel with a powerhead, there is usually a lever on the side where you can adjust the current. If you're using an air pump with an airstone, I doubt the current would be that strong, but you can get a valve that can be put in the airline to control the flow.

I wouldn't turn the undergravel off completely, just turn it down if you're really concerned about this. Otherwise the area under the filter plate will become anaerobic (no oxygen), and this will cause hydrogen sulfide gas to build up - when you turn the filter on again, the gas will be released, and this will be bad news for you fish!

It seems you asked about your filter sucking the eggs of your Tiger Barbs up and everyone thinks you should completely get rid of the undergravel filter. I have used an undergravel filter for a long time without any problems of ammonia or nitrites. Keep your filter, but you may want to lower the air flow of your pump by using valves. If you have a powerhead then turn it down. Tiger Barbs are notorious for eating their own eggs so your biggest concern should be preventing that.

Turn off the pump that is connected to the under gravel filter and use a sponge filter and a power filter.

i would suggest you turn off your underground gravel for 2 reasons
1- they will suck up your eggs
2-they are inefficient and practically a ammonia storage.
Turn it off, until eggs hatch then move the babies which you will need to do anyway then turn on your under gravel filter.

it wont suck the eggs because you have gravel. also you are going to kill all your fish eventually because udnerground filters dont work. they store up all the bacteria and if u ever nock it or bump it the wrong way. all that nitrate, nitrite and amonia will seep back into the tank killing everything

1.) wait till they hatch.
2.) scoop up the babies then.
3.) take the underground filter out.
4.) give the tank a good water change.
5.) either put the babies with the parents or keep them separate.
