I got him because he was a beautiful bluish, purple color and when he fanned out he looked even more beautiful. Now he's swimming around and everything, but not fanning. I even tried putting a mirror in front of him because I heard that it would exercise him. Whats going on?

possibly be minor shock if you didn't acclimate him properly, which he should easily recover from if he was healthy when you bought him and it sounds like he was. did you just put him right in the tank? ideally you should put him in a back if he's not already in one (with the water he came in) and float that in the tank (or bowl in most cases, although I am a firm believe in heated, filtered tanks for bettas, seeing as hey are tropical fish) for an hour adding a teaspoon of tank water to the bag every 15 mins.

could also just be nervous because of the new surroundings, give him tiem to adjust.

he sounds gorgeous, if you'd like to keep him in optimum health and make his colors more vibrant, I highly suggest a tank of at least 2.5 gallons with a heater (keeping the temp around 80°F) and filter if you don't already have one. this eliminates full water changes so you only need to do 25% water changes once a week. a few silk plants are always a good addition as well because they provide something to keep him busy and place to rest. good luck with your new betta :)

As many others that had said it is becoz it is new to its environment, just give it some time and it will start to get used to it. And fanning/flaring is not much of a good sign, (it does it when it feels threatened and angry) therefore ur betta is probably much happier in ur tank! =)
My fish do that aswell when they come into my tank for the first time, they get all shy and don't act much like they did in the store, but now they are very active and not shy^^

Oh btw i luv the colour or ur betta its so pwettifull!~^^
It would be sooo cool if u can get a pic in^^
And i also luv the name Bloo u gave it, it sounds so cute!!! =]

He sounds awesome, I love purple on a betta!

Just give him a day or two to get used to his new home and he will probably start fanning ( betta keepers call that flaring) a lot more. Putting your finger or better yet a bright colored crayon near the outside of his bowl and moving it slowly is a good way to get him to flare. It's good exercise for him, but don't do it long or too often. A few minutes a day is plenty.

Enjoy your new fish!

Sounds lovely :)

He's just adjusting to the new tank, he'll be fine. Bettas each have personalities of their own - he might not be a very 'flarey' kind of guy!

Make sure he has nice big leaves to rest on, that the tank is nice and warm and that there's not much of a current. If he's on his own, you don't need a filter at all really, but it's fine to have one if it doesn't disrupt the water too much.

When he's happy and relaxed he'll start blowing bubble nests - little layers of bubbles in the corner of the tank, and then you'll know he's settled.

Enjoy your new betta - you're hooked now!!

id say the new environment has put him in a bit of shock. another thing to remember is his water at least 70 degrees? is there no contaminents(SP?) in the water such as chlorine and whatnot. and please tell me hes in at least a 5 gallon tank.

i dont advise the hard plastic fake plants in his home bc they can do some fin damage.

and remember let water sit for 24 hours before changing at least 50 percent of his water once a week. chlorine is bad unless you got that stuff you put in it to get rid of it pretty quick.

you picked him up and dumped him in a new bigger tank...he is prolly still a little freaked out at the change in location. mine tried fighting a pepsi can that was the same color as him the first hour i had him home (can was next to the bowl) but my other one never had issues, they all adjust differantly

Don't they fan because they feel threatened? Maybe he just feels comfortable now that he's away from all those other bettas.

Actually, when he was fanning -- he was mad! They do that when they want to fight you. He probably hated being in that tiny thing in the petstore. Sounds happier now. I am sure he will do it again, mine sometimes do it when they want to eat.
