Ok, I have asthma and every time I'm around cigarrete smoke my throat closes up and I can;t breath. Well I just recently found out that my friend has taken up smoking. She's an aspiring model and is really stressed with modeling classes and school. She said that whenever she smoked it calmed her down and she had no worries. Well I don't want her to get cancer like many of my other family members. How do I convince her to stop so that every time I hug her I don't choke and so she doesn't hurt herself?

Let her know that her smoking triggers your asthma and you'd appreciate it if she could not smoke around you. Also, let her know that you are concerned about her health. If she is you friend, she will understand and listen to what you have to say.

First off and most importantly.. express to her what happens when your around smoke due to your asthma. Honestly I find that very rude. Its like smoking around pregnant women, you just don't do it.

Secondly, shes an aspriring model? Does she know that cigarettes cause aging.. not only that they cause WRINKLES. Find a 40 year old woman that smokes and take a look at her upper lip. You'll notice "lines". It's from constantly being puckered up to blow out smoke. Tell her that her modeling career isn't going to go far when she's 25 years old and looks 40!

As far as your own health is concerned you could try to convince her to try the patch or start chewing nicorette instead.

If you want to help her I guess you have to tackle the bad habit she has and replace it with a better habit that calms her. When I'm worked up I sometimes count to 100, to take my mind off the issue. She could try listening to relaxing music on an ipod or something like that. If we want to make ourselves more calm another thing we can do is take deep slow breaths, and concentrate on the breathing. When we are stressed we take fast shallow breaths.

Unfortunately, there's probably not a lot you can do. She's surely aware of the dangers of smoking. It's pretty common knowledge these days. If she still decides to smoke, then there's not much you can do other than tell her to please not smoke around you.

Tell her she's slowly killing herself with an unhealthy obsession. She's your friend, she should know that you just want what's best for her. Right?
