Front of house are those who meet the customers; thus front desk, bartender, etc are front of house.

Back of house are those invisible positions that keep it all working, auditor, cook, maintenance, etc.

front is all face to face customer interaction, back is behind the scenes (such as administrative)

"Front" deal directly with the clientelle (Bellhops, waiters, registration clerks, etc).

"Back" rarely deal with directly with clientelle (janitorial, maintenance, cooks, dishwashers, etc).
