I just answered this on another question toward the bottom of the page...
My favorite is Torch Song Trilogy, with Harvey Fierstein.
The only person I idolized when I was growing up was my mom.. I didn't know of any gay people, so I had no gay role model or anything.

I don't think I could ever pick just one!
I don't know if it counts as gay, but Hedwig and the Angry Inch will always hold a special place in my heart- and I can watch it over and over again.
Another Gay Movie is also a big favorite of mine in the comedy department.
I guess if I had to pick an all-around winner, it'd probably be a tie between Better Than Chocolate and But I'm a Cheerleader, because they both have comedy, drama, romance, deal with issues but have happy endings, and are just feel-good.
Did I idolize anyone as a child? Well, I had a big thing for Gwen Stefani in No Doubt- posters all over the wall, singing all the songs- I absolutely loved (and still love!) her. So I don't know that she was my idol, per se, but definitely a celebrity obsession.

I'm a big alternative fan. So I'd like to recommend the films, music, and fanzines of G.B. Jones and Bruce La Bruce.
As far a role models, if they can't be the aforementioned, the I'll pick Vi Subversa and Lance D'Boyle of The Poison Girls, who proved that age is just a number when in midlife they started a Queer-friendly, political, psyche-punk band.

Overall: Brokeback Mountain. It's one of the great screen romances regardless of gender issues.
Gay male romance: Brokeback Mountain
Gay male drama: Urbania
Lesbian: Saving Face
Transgender (child): Ma Vei en Rose.
Transgender (MTF): Different for Girls
Transgender (FTM): Boys Don't Cry
Edit to respond to the comment below: By all accounts Brandon Teena was an FTM transsexual, not a transvestite. He lived as a male, identified as male to his friends and to his girlfriend, and used a male name. The director of the movie referred to him as such, so regardless of what you might think of the person, the character in the movie is transgendered.
In any case, even if you consider him to be a cross-dressing woman, that would make the movie lesbian themed, so it still fits.

Adam and Steve, Aux Cage au Folles (french version), Pricilla Queen of the Desert, The Band Played On, Fortune in Men's Eyes, Torchsong Trilogy (best of its genre), Brokeback Mountain (probably the best production wise), and The Party with Gregory Harrison and Eric Roberts....
TV: Queer as Folk, and OZ
Idolized: any guy who played Tarzan except Johnny Wiesmiller, and STEVE REEVES..what a hunk

I love "High Art" with Ally Sheedy and Radha Mitchell and I also really like "Boys don't cry" even though it made me very sad and also this movie but I can't remember the name of it with Piper Perabo where she is in love with her roommate. And also, a movie called "Imagine me and you"! There are others, i just cant think of them. I think a gay film is successful based on its realism and depth into the relationship and characters!

well i have a joke i love
4 men were walking back from golfing all day
one went to pay and the others started to talk about their sons
"well my son is a stock broker and he is so successful he gave his best freind a free stock portfolio"
the next boasted "well my son is a dentist and he is so successful he gave his friend a free Ferrari"
the third gloated" well my son is a doctor and he gave his friend a free house!"
everyone in the clubhouse who was listening nodded and gasped in awe at the lavish generosity of these successful sons and their fathers beamed with pride
at that time the fourth man returned and was asked how his son was doing"well I have got to be honest my son is gay and works as an erotic dancer"the room was silent in shock at his candor
The man went on "but he must be doing pretty well because his last three boyfriends bought him a stock portfolio a ferrari and a house"

Birdcage is fantastic but recently I saw a gay movie which really did express the struggle for some: Latter Days.
If you haven't seen it - I recommend you do.
