"the distance 'd' travelled by a ball rolling down an incline is directly proportional to the square of the total time. a) Express this relationship with an equation. then b) if a ball starting from rest rolls 4 feet in 0.5 seconds, find the constant of the proportionality in part a).

Can someone please help me understand direct proportionality? Thank you so much!

directly proportional means that as one variable increases, the other one also increases. Here distance increases as time increases

d = at2 (where a is a constant)
4' = a(0.5sec)^2
4 = .25a
a = 4/.25 = 16 feet per second squared

directly proportional means that if one increases the other increases if one decreases the other decreases,
eg.

if you have a container on some scales which has sand in it,

if you add sand to this the height of the sand rises and the weight does too

if you remove sand the height of the sand will drop as will the weight
therefore they are directly porportional.
