okay, but then couldnt middle school be 6-7-7-9? take kids out of high school without giving more to the elementary school? also, Middle school is the time where they have to start growing up, its better for them to relize they will have to over over 3 years, or 4, then just 2?

I went to 6th grade in elementary school 20 years ago. My city put the 6th graders back in elementary school and took 6th grade out of middle school last year. In fact, I taught 6th graders in an elementary school last year. My students were so immature that they would have been clobbered in a middle school. I will tell you like I told my parents. "There is a big difference between the age of 11 and 14." The students will be more mature when they enter high school at the age of 14. 6th grade in middle school is more fun for students. But 6th grade in elementary school is a more nurturing environment.

4th grade they took us away from the nice elementary school and put us in this horrible place, Pine Hill School in Sherborn MA, where there was no swings or anything to play on at recess. All kids did was jump rope in 4th grade, then get meaner and hung around acting like punks by 5th grade, chasing us out of their side of the playground we had to go through from lunch to our side. It all sucked by 4th grade, but was still seen as an elementary school. I then went into a private elementary school which was WAY BETTER!!! They had a fantastic playground we could keep playing in at recess even in 6th grade. And the kids weren't so obnoxious to the younger ones there. We were stuck leaving elementary school in 7th grade into what back then was called Junior High School. I see kids stuck going into middle school in 6th grade now and pity them. Adults are in such a rush to end their happy childhood days it seems. Let them stay kids as long as they can be happy that way! By 7th grade I didn't miss playgrounds at school and it was okay the fun was gone. It was a lot harder going into Pine Hill in 4th grade when I still loved playing on swings and was still a total child locked up in a boring school.

I went to a middle school with grades 6, 7, 8 and then on to high school. I thought it was great because at 11/12 I wasn't in a school with little kids anymore, but I was still not in high school with kids who I would have found intimidating because they were soooo much older!
It helped me and my friends to feel more grown up without putting us in situations we weren't mature enough for yet. I think it's a great idea!

I think they shouldn't, because I started Middle School in Fourth Grade. I made it fine and so did everyone else at my Public School. I didn't see any problems with it. There were actually NO complaints. The 4th and 5th graders were changing classes like the other grades and we had the highest test scores in the State, so it shows that being in Middle School at a young age did not affect anything major! I hope this helped. Good Luck with the situation.

I think my school had it down pretty well. The 6th grade had there own building and though they did switch classes every hour the same people were in your class. It helped get you ready for middle school but it was enough like elementary that it wasn't a total shock.

When I went to school it was grade school (k-6) junior high (789) then high school (10,11, 12). I really like this calander better because when a freshman (14 year old) hits high school they are just not as mature as the older kids. I found that with myself and my own kids I tried to act like I knw alot more than I did just to be "cool". The pressures for drugs and sex are so high an younger kids just dont have the mental developement that older kids hav.

Others have been interested in this same question, and have researched it thoroughly instead of just relying on intuition and anecdotal reports. The verdict seems to be that sixth grade in middle school has lasting negative effects on behavior and learning. You can find a news article about the study here: http://www.newsobserver.com/146/story/547649.html as well as a link to the original study. (You will have to look through several links.)
