Subway was started in 1965 in Connecticut by Fred DeLuca on a $1,000 loan from family friend Dr. Peter Buck as a way for Fred to help put himself through college. This why the company is called Doctor's Associates. Inc. It was originally called "Pete's Subs and Salads", but (if you say it fast enough this will happen) people mistakenly thought it was "Pizza, Subs and Salads" (because of the rapid-fire talking pace of the East Coast. He renamed it Subway. The first sandwich served was a Classic Italian BMT. BMT stands for Brooklyn Manhattan Transfer---the nickname New Yorkers gave the firs Subway built in the US and the first sub built by Subway. After figuring out that by franchising, he could make a real go of a business venture with Subway, he opened up another, and so on to the point they are today....the second largest restaurant chain the world in more countries than McD's and having more operating units in North America and Canada than McD's.

The modern history of fast-food in America began on July 7, 1912 with the opening of a fast food restaurant called the Automat in New York.

McDonald's, the largest fast-food chain in the world and the brand most associated with the term "fast food," was founded as a barbecue drive-in in 1940 by Dick and Mac McDonald. After discovering that most of their profits came from hamburgers, the brothers closed their restaurant for three months and reopened it in 1948 as a walk-up stand offering a simple menu of hamburgers, french fries, shakes, coffee, and Coca-Cola, served in disposable paper wrapping.
