Hello. I am running Windows XP Service Pack 2 Edition with Microsoft Net Framework 3.0 on a Dell Optiplex GX1 450 Pentium 3. I currently have two 120gb drives working on the machine. I am trying to migrate the Master set 120gb drive to another machine and replace it with a 160gb drive. After much searching on the internet and my PC repair text book I am unable to get XP to recognize the whole 160gb. I have seen several comments regarding XP Service Pack 1 and 1a being options. When I try and install on the machine in question, it states essentially that it is unable to. I have tried using FDISK and FORMAT to no avail. Can anyone suggest something to help?

I believe you need a Bios update to recognize any HDD over 137 GB. Have you checked the Dell website for the latest Bios update for your computer?

Since you have 2 HDDs, once you take off the Master, there is no OS. The Master HDD is the one where the computer boots from, and you must have an Operating System (OS) installed on that one. As long as there are 2 HDDs that are recognized by the BIOS, it will only look to the Master Slot to read an OS. So You have to format XP to the 160 before you can start your machine. The Slave HDD doesn't carry a copy of the OS.

The best way to get arround this is to slipstream your xp cd with service pack 2. here is a guide on how to do this. http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sp2_slipstream.asp Now use the new CD to format and install windows as the 137GB patch will be included and windows will see your entire hard drive. Obtain sp2 here http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=049c9dbe-3b8e-4f30-8245-9e368d3cdb5a&displaylang=en
I know this will work as i have had to do the same thing. You will need a burning program such as nero, ISO buster to extract boot image from your original CD and SP2 full package which i have already linked.

I hope this helps Good Luck

Partition the drive?

I'm sitting with a 250G drive I've done that with.

As for the drive itself, make sure the drivers are up-to-date, and you may have to go into the BIOS to ensure your computer can recognise it...plus, depending on the manufacturer, and what you're looking at, some HD manufacturers set K's, Mb's, Gb's, etc, at 1000 units instead of the actual physical count that each unit contains..
