That's only one reason. It's the inadequate social structure that causes people to snap.
If he had a peer group of his own to look after him, set him up with dates, cheer him up, understand him, not condemn him for being strange or different, he may not have snapped. If his peers who hadn't wanted to be his friends had at least reported him enough that he had a mandatory psych evaluation, his problems could have been detected and helped.
Now though, people are afraid of terror. The government terrorizes its people by taking away their rights, the media terrorizes the people by deluging everyone with images of horrific events saying "This might happen to you if you don't support the government" And people cut off contact with everyone else because they're afraid of being hurt, so people are left alone, rejected because they haven't adapted socially to the way other people around them are, and they snap.
The person in question actually wrote many violent stories and plays depicting unhappiness with normal situations and a desire to really hurt others just because they are more normal than he is. In one play he wrote of being cruel to someone because they couldn't provide a step up in life, and that person reacting with violence to the cruelty. He was an underdog who snapped because he hadn't learned that there are more women out there that aren't so cruel and other people exist that can understand.
Yes, the preppies should be nice, or they better start carrying guns.

Three fathered children with women who now hate them and have ruined their lives. Two have killed themselves, as well they should. At least two that I know of work fast food jobs after dropping out of college. One has a kid after she screwed the entire soccer team. Who's the b!%#h now? Just goes to show you, just because mommy and daddy have the bank, doesn't mean you're a winner. Chances are, it just means you're a loser with an expense account. Me? I was the quiet guy who was at the back of the class who read novels all day and played on a computer. Now I'm in the military with a decent career and a stable job. I may have to work for my money but it's a better way.

Newsflash: It's not like this guy was some poor outsider. He was in college so I have a hard time believing he was completely broke. Even if he was, big deal and cry me a river. Who says he was picked on by anybody? This isn't junior high school. The preppy pricks at college wouldn't do much more than ignore a loner geek anyway.

FWIW, from what I have read about the Virginia Tech shooter, this was a young man with some pretty heavy mental health issues. He had no friends and apparently had problems socializing with people on even the most basic levels, and from the descriptions people have given, he has never had friends and has always had some pretty severe problems just interacting with people.
This sounds to me like someone who had some heavy-duty personality disorder issues, with possible depression or bipolar mood disorder on top of it. In no way does the description of the shooter sound like someone who had even average normal coping skills or social skills.
This is someone who, in a word, needed HELP. It's worth noting that at least one of the professors in his department had tried to get him to get counseling, but he resisted, and in the end they couldn't make him get help.
I don't think that the fault lies with preppy, stuck up kids. I think the fault lies with a defective brain chemistry that made the shooter a very, very sick man who became marginalized like a lot of the mentally ill.

Not to sound cruel or anything but I feel no sympathy for the idiots that bully kids like that and then act shocked and surprised when the kid bring their dad's gun to school and goes John Woo on everyone. What the heck? How could the bullies not see it coming?
Also I make sure I be nice to EVERYONE so I can make their day and prevent them from doing something they will regret. Sadly I see kids at my school get bullied everyday when they are just trying to fit in. I know this kid at my school who has anger issues. I try to make sure he doesn't get angry and go postal. He gets angry and trashed the whole place up and walks off of campus.

We've all went to school with rich, preppy, stuck up kids but that doesn't mean we go around killing people. I went to school with a few but I'm not gonna go around killing everyone in sight. You just ignore them, like they ignore you and get on with your life. People like the guy at Va Tech are psycho to begin with and just need someone to blame it on.

No, The killers are just flat out psychos to begin with. It isn't going to matter how rich or stuck up you are just the fact that you're doing what they don't like. Making yourself a target is alot easier than one might think.

the va tech kid was a 10 year old immigrant from korea n he never fit in. after all those years of loneliness with no hope of ever fitting in, he became jealous and envious of those who seemed to "have it all." he would never be able to achieve the luxuries of the lifestyle those kinds of kids took for granted. they were different than him. they were better than him. he came to hate them for just being the "preppy, stuck up kids" you mention. and when you hate something so much-yesterday happens.

"Preppy, stuck up kids"? Seems to ME like this idiot was the one held others in contempt and shunned the world. Get real...

I doubt it. I was in the Memorial Middle School shooting in Joplin Missouri and that wasn't the reason. I'm a student there.
