What you grow may well depend on the amount of available water during periods of summer drought. Trees are bullies when it comes to food, light, and moisture.
Ground covers for acidic sandy soil
Goutweed, Ground Elder is restrained well by drier shade where it can be invasive otherwise. Variegated form also less invasive. I combine it with the next two
Sweet Woodruff this is a great ground cover under trees and blooms white right now in zone 7
Oxalis looks like foutleaf clover and blooms pink or white
Arctostaphylos uva-ursil-Bearberry (fast-creeping mats of glossy leaves that are deep green in summer and bronze-red in winter. Does not like wet roots at all nor fertilizer)
Epimedium, bishops hat ( takes it drier)
Viola odorata or V. labradorica (also can go a bit drier)
Thses will need more water
Hostas
Ligularia - 'Britt Marie Crawford' (I love it as much as hostas!) and 'Othello'. These will need to be watered while establishing but WOW when they are mature!
Brunnera
Ajuga 'Caitlin's Giant'
Ferns like it moist
Maidenhair Ferns
Japanese Painted Ferns
Autumn Ferns (any ferns, really)
Tricyrtis aka Toad Lilies (medium height)
Japanese Anemones (taller plants though)
Pulmonaria (lungwort)
Hellebores (not to dry)
Astilbe (wonderful - heights vary, needs steady moisture)
Heuchera
Tiarella
Hydrangea in blues
Ginger
A variety of aroids - Jack in the Pulpits, Arum, etc.
Chelone aka Turtlehead 'Hot Lips' or any color

azaleas and blueberries. Then you get some nice blueberries to eat, too!! I think you would need the lowbush, native type blueberry, and it will need some sun.

Any type of Lantana. Peach sunrise is my favorite, but any of them flower nicely and killing it is almost impossible.
