I am a Christian but not so sure of this question.I fell like im becoming atheist.Should i?I dont know if God would be real.I watched a show on Science Discovery and it was talking about Charles Darwin and it was talking about Why Are We Here.I thought aabout it for a little and was confused.I cant tell what to believe in.Atheists might be right,Christians might be right,Muslims might be right,Iraquis might be right but know one knows. But one thing I cant understand is how can we just die?It seems weird. What would it be like?Like do we sleep forever.Or is reincarnation real?Im not sure what to do.I feel, if God's not real, then my life would just become pointless. Also, if reincarnation is real, then why dont we bring back memories so we can just have fun and we know we're invincible.I know this might be long but I need help.PLEASE HELP!

You watched a show? I think you need to do a little more research. Read the bible, read the Koran, and the Torah. Study the world religions and you will find many flaws. Each of the Holy Books are filled with contradictions. Each was compiled by men. Even if you subscribe to the tenets of one of these religions, if you truly study them you will have doubts. Science is no different. Many of the various theories are no less a leap of faith than a belief in God. The Big Bang for instance dictates that a teaspoon size amount of material began all of what we call our universe. If true it does not begin to address the origin of the material.
And if you can believe in the infinite nature of the universe, to which no one has come up with a viable alternative, how far of a stretch is it to believe in God or reincarnation or everlasting life in an ethereal form. Believe what you want but live your life so that when you die nobody can say that your life was pointless and meaningless as some have suggested. If there is a God that may be just the ticket, and if not at least you used your time well. As a Franciscan Priest I knew once advised, "don't let the bastards get you down".
It's all about faith, even atheism itself. The belief in nothing is a bigger stretch than any other. After all, how do you deny what you see and feel each day? It came from nothing? Where did nothing come from?

My dad, before he retired, was a minister for 55 years. We traveled to many cities as he preached the gospel. I tried my best to accept what he taught and even preached the word myself for a year or so. Then, in the middle of a sermon I came to a very real paradox. I was all of a sudden having doubts and wasn't sure if I should keep preaching the sermon which no longer made sense or if I should stop right then and walk away. Well, I continued the sermon, although I cut it short, and when I walked out of that church it was the last time I ever went to church for any reason. I was confused just as you are right now. I had to ask myself some hard questions. What if my dad was wrong? What if the catholics were right? What if there is no God? What if reincarnation is real and my next life would be spent as someone's house cat?

I was so confused that it actually made me physically sick. I realized if I were raised as a Buddhist that there would be no way I would believe in Christ. I was raised to believe in Christ, therefore I did not believe as Buddhist believe. It seemed to me that it was just a matter of fate. It all depended on where and how I was raised as to what I would believe. Then it occured to me that there were so many different beliefs, no matter what I did I might chose to believe a false doctrine. Not all could be right since not all taught the same doctrines. I had to make a choise.

What I chose doesn't really matter, and it wouldn't help you if I told you what it was. The important thing for you to know is ... you have already made a choise and you just need someone to tell you it's the right one. You have been raised to believe a certain way and now you're having doubts. The way you were raised will always be the standard you will go by when comparing your belief with others. No matter what I choose to believe I still use my father's religion as a measuring stick to my own belief.

For a long time I thought about the same things you are thinking about. I couldn't decide what to do. Then it hit me!! I knew what I had to do. It was so simple. I had to make a choice and stick to it.

You see, my friend, NO ONE knows everything and no one knows what will happen after we die. The only way we can get thru life without going completely nuts is to have FAITH. That's it. FAITH.

Now, when I say faith I'm not neccessarily saying a religious faith. I'm saying faith in yourself that you have made the right choice. You can spend your whole life trying to figure out what every religion teaches and what every scientist teaches and you will still have to do one thing ... Make a choice and have faith it's the right choice. Once you've done that do not let ANYONE tell you differently about how you should believe. Do not have doubts either. You will be a much happier person and life will be so much more enjoyable after you have made your choice and gotten all your doubts off your mind.

Now my choice may be the wrong one. (that's why I choose not to tell you what it is so I won't influence you) But it is my choice and I believe it firmly. No one can change my mind and I am a much happier person now that I ever have been. When it comes right down to it every choice is a valid choice. In every belief there are moments of uncertainty and doubts. Your ability to overcome those doubts is the key. Just ... make a choice and don't worry anymore. You'll never know if it's right or wrong and no one can tell you definately if it's right or wrong. Only when we die will we find out what the next life will be.

So, until that time you can spend the rest of your days in torment trying to figure out what's right OR you can make a choice now, stick to it, and be happy.

All of this in a nut shell: Make a choice - have faith - be happy.

You should consider why if God were not real would it depress you so much-Just think you could do anything and it would be OK for if there is no God then there also is no Heaven and No Hell. Mankind would not be afraid of punishment and we would not be inspired by love for our fellow men to care and help our neighbor for "Love Thy Neighbor"came from Jesus Christ-God. There would be No Commandments and therefore no rules to live by and if our Life is only the years that we live here on this earth then its ok and should be Me that is important and should be satisfied. From where do we get our Humanity, from where do we get love, respect ,honor and all the values that keep us from being savages. If there is no God then why not be a savage for we can do anything we want for there would be no consequence as long as you got away with it. Do you want there to be no God. For if there is no God then there is also NO Hope of anything better. And when someone we love dies how awful then to not have the hope of seeing,to be together again. Why there would be no end to grief for its the hope, the Belief of seeing them again that makes the grief bearable and dries the tears in time. Would it be fair then for the very little kids who get cancer and die or the babies who live for a few hours. To have so short a life would that then be fair --- or is it OK for a happy, painfree forever life waits. We all question esp when we attempt to make sense of Darwinism and God Creating us but sometimes the undertanding comes later esp when you read the Bible. Get a bible,i've had friends even get a Childrens bible for easier to read/understand and in time some of these questions will no longer confuse and the Bible will make more sense to you . it also is a good thing to pray when you get confused for we've all been there But the Holy Ghost-also God will help how-all of a sudden one day without even thinking of these questions a thought will come into your mind that will have you understanding.Happens to me. But relax you'll know in time but in the meantime in the morning when you wake up go stand outside and look at all that is around you -the skie the trees flowers the green grass the people and you and ask where did it all come from ,where did he people come from. Think on this too-they can take the eggs (life) of animla, people and they can fertilize with... and in the lab they can make a baby person,a baby chick, cow a animal. They can take cells/dna etc from a animal and clone it -make it just like it. Now the scientist who do this they say they created life but Not really-they duplicated ,copied-cloned it and they can grow the egg into a human being in a lab instead of inside the animal thats the only difference a lab instead of the body But to this day no one has ever been able to make a seed from nothing, no one has ever been able to take dust and make from this dust the form, shape of a man and then breathe on it and it lives-this is what God did when He first made Adam. No one has ever created anything that did not already exist, that was already made by God.. The best thing is to read the bible and always pray for God to help you understand and as your knowledge grows so will the understanding or if you have the chance talk to a minister, priest or o to a church nearby and check into the youth program for not only will you learn but also find friends.

My mom is Christian, I escaped it. God is an idea, but nevertheless in the slim chance Christians are right then why risk it?
That was an argument that was on a brochure in San Francisco one day, couldn't believe it.
Anyways on some degree everyone could be considered right, there's no need to tie yourself to one group. Create your own religion that suits you. Organized religion is used to keep people in line with hope of heaven and fear of hell. You mentioned a few religions above, why don't you combine traits found in each of those into your own, faith of a Christian, logic on an Atheist, wisdom of a Muslim, moral of an Iraquis? You said without a god your life would become pointless, now why allow that? Believing in your own god won't kill you, and even if there is none what harm does it do?

Glad i could help..if I did

When humans first became aware of their own mortality, there was something akin to wanton recklessness. After all, if you're going to die anyway, what's the sense in worrying about how straight the freaking rocks are around your domicile? Those members of the human race who were leaders figured out that they needed some way to get their followers to focus so that they weren't just breeding and eating. Everything that couldn't be explained by their limited reasoning and lack of science became a manipulation by a higher being. Started out with simple crap like the sun god, then a god of water, air, love, strength, speed, etc...etc...etc...and each time human reasoning and science squelched the mysticism involved, a new twist was added, until, lo and behold, they were just kidding, there's only one god really, and he loves us so much that he hates what we do when we aren't productive society members, or not following his rules, and if we behave ourselves, and be the kind of children he dictates, we get to go to the land of milk and honey when we cast off our mortal shell and proceed to the next life, but, if we are bad children, we don't get to stay here, oh no, because they can't stop us from dying, so they had to have an eternal punishment. That's the way it goes, an all powerful all knowing all everything being is so bored in this great big beautiful universe that he spends his time watching all of the billions of us that are here on earth, just waiting for us to die so he can say, you go up, or you go down.

I think you should classify yourself as agnostic until you have found whatever truth you can rely on.

I went through exactly what you are going through. The doubt tears you apart. I was raised in real holiness churches and boy they were scary, i went to others after I was grown because I wanted my children to have exposure to religion and decided that when they were old enough then they should be able to choose what they wanted to believe but I wanted them to have the experience so that they would have something to compare it to. The churches we attended to me felt "fake" anyway to make a long story short, I decided that it was time to think logically. I looked at Wicca but some of their beliefs were as strange as christianity. I also got to thinking "what if the Muslims/other religions are right and we are wrong?" and the more that I read the bible about God the more I got the impression that he was not loving he was more spiteful and jealous . My in-laws are real holy rollers and so we don;t discuss religion at all. They have that sweet motto about preferring to live their lives like there is a God than not to and find out there is or some crud like that. I think that when my mother passed was the final piece of proof that if there was a God then he was a sicko. I have now decided to live my life religion free Of course the Wiccan Rede still appeals to me. "An it harm none do as you will" to me that means live your life as good as possible don't do harm to yourself or others Mostly just mind your business and I will leave you alone until you ask for help. As far as death goes I have never died so I cannot say for sure but I do not believe that my soul is going to depart after all to me the soul is your conscience, my soul speaks to me in my own voice.. I think that we simply die and are buried. It would be a different state than sleep though because we know nothing after death. That is my reason for being an organ donor. That is the most real way to live on after death. I know that I did not answer your question I probably just brought up more but the thing to remember is just find out as much as you can about any :"religion" you think you want to be. You will find out that they are all full of unanswered questions Oh yeah another thing - I do believe in tolerance if I am at some event where they feel the need to pray I will sit quietly and let them. I also do not care where they post the 10 commandments if I don't want to read them then I don't . Many hard core Atheists "don;'t want their kids hearing that stuff" like I said earlier I think all children should be exposed to lots of experiences to make informed decisions

Without God there is no point to life. Okay I believe in Darwin by the way. But just because I believe in evolution doesnt mean I dont believe in God. Darwin and science still dont explain the most important question in this universe, why do I exist. Darwin can say how life expands and evolves and where it might be going. But it cant tell us where it came from and what happens to us after we die.

So dont let these morons convince you that science proves theres no God. No the only thing science proves is what exists in this universe. It cant comprehend its conception and until then the debate continues.

But a question I have to atheist and why I believe in a greater being is this....Okay if we do evolve as science seems to suggest then how can you say that the very fundamental beginning of this universe is that we evolved from nothing? Doesn't make sense to me and shouldn't to them either.

If you don't believe in God anymore, you are an atheist. You can't make yourself believe in God if you don't. It's as simple as that. I don't think I count as an atheist, because I keep thinking well, maybe there is a God. I am shocked by how magical the world can be sometimes. The way I see it, if there is, he (or she or it) isn't so petty to punish people by the way they worship. I think that any God, if there is one, would want you to enjoy your life without hurting anyone, so I made that my philosophy. I am living my life the best that I can, and I am not afraid of what will happen after I die.
Good Luck

Why would your life be pointless without God?

You must make that decision for yourself. Please do not associate God exclusively with religion. Forget religion. What makes sense to you?

I believe our souls live many lives. We come here for a reason. We are here to educate our souls. We choose a theme, or what lesson do we wish to learn, specifically. We do not come here to have fun. Life is hard, this is not fun compared to our life at home on the other side. Life is full of pain and disappontments, as well as joy. If we remembered too much it would defeat the purpose of what we want to accomplish by undertaking another lifetime.

I don't blame you if you are really confused because I too was once confused about my faith , God and everything. But I came to realize that It was just a test to prove that you have faith to the almighty God. Because If you Know, Jesus was tested to show that he is the son of God but even though that miracles were happening they still closed their minds and rejected Him, Those are the souls that cannot be saved, the souls that do not believe God, Jesus and the Holy spirit is real an working. Maybe you are one of those wretched souls trying to find blindly the proofs that are just under his nose.
