Not goldfish, that's for sure. Danios would be ok as long as you have several (5-6) of them, otherwise they would probably chase the betta. Most small tetras and most live bearers are also good choices for betta tank mates.

i'm not a fan of zebras, they may nip the betta's fins. Some bettas will not tolerate other fish. If you want more fish in the tank, rearrange the tank whenever you add a new fish, that way the betta thinks it's somwhere new and won't try to defend it's territory from the new fish. I would get a few otto cats (they are little sucker fish that stay small) you could also try and african dwarf frog. Sometimes they get on well with bettas, sometimes not. Make sure you have plenty of plants and hiding places in the tank to prevent fights. good luck!

Pretty much anything that doesn't look like either a male or female Betta. Probably something that won't seem like a threat to the Betta. Avoid barbs because they have the nasty habbit of nipping at long tails. Tetras would be a good choice, avoid Mollies since they look a lot like female Betta. For some reason males will attack both male and female unless mating.

A 2.5 won't be even super sufficient for one betta and you will desire to have a heater till your room is often 80F. That small of a tank won't carry a cycle so the filter out is rather plenty a ornament. you will nevertheless would desire to do an entire sparkling out approximately each 3 days. you could not placed a woman and male betta jointly different than for a quick era for breeding after conditioning the fish. they're going to combat to the dying. **

Goldfish are not good companions. They are coldwater fish, bettas are tropical.

I would look into danios, zebras, or neons. Small schooling fish that can move faster than the betta aren't fin nippers, and don't have flowy fins that may provoke a betta's natural attack response.

Try to find some non agressive fish. The bettas i've had are hardy and can tolerate a lot of water conditions, so I wouldn't worry about that as much as the temper of the fish. At Petsmart it says it under the fish's picture and name.

I second the above, although the larger tetra sometimes nip fins - lemon tetra in particular.

Catfish and corys are fine, guppies and other livebearers (also a source of live food, the bettas will eat the young) and white cloud mountain minnows - one of the few fish hardier than bettas.

i had a 50 gallon tank before with several species of tetrasand it goes well with my beta fish when i desided to include it to the tank. But be sure to always rearrange your tank for your beta not to have a territory. these is the main reason for their fight.
