If you are thinking of Texas having been a U.S. territory for a time before becoming a state --though that was the usual order that is NOT what happened with Texas.

Rather, after Texas broke away from Mexico and declared itself an independent in 1836, it remained independent until annexed by the U.S. at the end of 845 and entering the Union AS a state.

Also, from 1821, when Mexico gained independence from Spain, until 1836, Texas was PART of Mexico --though its exact rights as a state were not clearly defined by the Mexican Constitution of 1824.

So, strictly speaking the ONLY sort of "territorial" period for Texas would be the time before Mexican independence when Texas was being settled by groups from Mexico AND the U.S.... though actually the Mexican government allowed U.S. settlers to colonize within Texas until 1830. So the LATEST date you could set for any "territorial" phase would be 1830.
