Hey, for those of you who ain't Sanjaya fans, you are preaching to the choir. But, did you know that William Shatner had a "Gold" album back in the 70s? He didn't do it because he could sing. Same way with Lief Garret, Hardy Boy Sean Cassidy, Michael J. Fox or Ricky Nelson. Yet they all had albums and singles that went gold and some platinum. None could really sing. Yet they became teen idols and yes, American Idols.
A "Gold" album in the good ole USA means that 500,000 copies have been sold... this could be a single or the entire album / CD. Platinum is a million and diamond is 10,000,000. Over 30,000,000 people watch this show each week. It's obviously the female teen demographic that keeps Sanjaya on the show. And he has never been in the bottom 3 as much as he probably deserves it. If I were Simon, why would I EVER leave the show over this when my entire existance had been about finding top selling "Idols". Isn't he shooting himself in the foot?

Brittany Spears can sing? What about the fact that Simon makes $60 Million a year from the show? But he's so noble he's going to leave because of Sanjaya? Guys, this isn't a "singing competition" It's a popularty show. It's flawed because anyone who can buy a song or an album can vote. And those of us who want Sanjaya ain't voting. If he was so committed to this being a singing competition, he would have left when Kelly Pickering was on the show and she wouldn't have a recording contract. By nature this is a popularity contest and in a lot of ways... with the exceptions of Rubin and Clay, it's a beauty contest.

Because if Sanjaya wins American Idol it will make a mockery of all of Simon's hard work thus far to create a great show. He understands that people are trying to make a joke out of American Idol by voting for Sanjaya - they are willing the show to fail. Simon, I am sure, is too proud to stand behind a show that can be ruined like that by thoughtless morons.

Just because someone is voted American Idol doesn't mean they are a marketable commodity...Look at what has happened in past years with people finishing so far back out selling the winners. Fox and Cowell can't keep putting money into a show that will essentially be a loss with people such as Taylor Hicks winning each year. Chris Daughtry has outsold him by leaps and bounds.
They have to have someone who is going to sell enough albums to justify a million dollar recording contract. Being cute and sweet and well liked doesn't sell albums talent does.
I think someone is pushing Sanjaya into the spotlight. If you notice each week, Seacrest comes to his defence all the time. I don't agree with belittling someone for spite, but when Simon and Randy try to make people see that he doesn't actually have the talent it takes to succeed they just boo the criticism...Even Paula is running out of nice things to say.

I think you are mistaken about Simon's entire existence being all about "American Idol". The show is not a popularity contest. It was always meant to be a talent contest. This year, the people have turned it into a "popularity" contest.
Simon was quite successful finding "Idols" long before "American Idol" (I mean, look at IL DIVO) If he didn't have the talent for doing that, nobody would have ever asked him to be on the show. Certainly nobody would have ever put up with his crap for this long, if he didn't know what he was talking about. He might be an arrogant blow hard, but he's got the talent.
Personally, I'm glad he has the integrity to stand up for the music industry that he has worked so hard to find true talent for. More people should take that much pride in their work!
Like you pointed out. Anyone with an iota of popularity can make a buck in the music industry. Simon is looking for the diamonds in the rough who truly deserve to be in the industry. If he can't continue to do that on "American Idol", then he will go back to doing that on his own. I think it's great that he is willing to give up that fat paycheck to do that!

The reason that some of the people you mentioned became "american idols" is because they are totally gorgeous. Sanjaya is not. nor can he sing. Now it is all about publicity. He has gotten soooo much recognition is why he is still around...thats it.. also, rumor has it that lots of ppl from india are calling in votes for him bcz of his heritage alone. He is NO american idol, and if he wins, I don't blame simon a bit for quitting. This has become a joke.

It's because Sanjaya is an embarrassment. it will make Simon's show look bad, and ratings will probably decrease. I bet you that the only reason Sanjaya got on is for laughs. Voting is probably rigged until the final rounds.

and remember it was Simon, Randy and Paula who put Sanjaya in the Top 12 to begin with.....
There are a lot of famous singers who can't really sing but are more famous because of their personality when they sing....

The reason is because they are looking for actual SINGERS. Yes performances enhance your song, but it still comes down to hitting the notes on-key and on-rhythm. No matter how cute/pretty Britney Spears looked, if she couldn't carry a tune she would not have sold as many albums as she did.
