All you can do is copy and paste. You can't link a cell in one Excel file to a cell in another Excel file. The only way to do this to have separate tabs in the same file.

It is actually possible. What you want to create is known as an "external" link. You'll find the details you need here:

http://ict.cas.psu.edu/training/howto/excel/ext_links_maintain.html

An example: you want to add the contents of cell A1 from worksheet1 from a file called Book1.xls to cell B1 in a new file. The following would be the correct formula to enter in cell B1 of the new file to make it happen:

=[Book1.xls]Sheet1!$A$1

The method outlined on the link above will make it even simpler, no fancy formula typing required.

Have fun.

Suppose you want sheet 1 A1 to reference sheet 2 A1.

Put this in sheet 1 A1

=Sheet2!A1
