It is true that 1960 witnessed the first televised debate in a Presidential campaign, but I'm not sure it was that great a "turning point", since there wasn't another televised debate until 1976! (and we've had them ever since)
So you might go with another distinctive -- it was the first time Americans elected a Roman Catholic to be President.

There can be other answers, but mine would be the use of television as a decisive factor. It had been used in sound-bite fashion by the Eisenhower people against Stevenson, but they never had a televised debate.

Television! People saw Kennedy vs. Nixon and judged by appearance more than political views. Maybe not a bad thing there however. Imagine Nixon becoming president then!!

Ironically enough live TV or not "Fat Boy" is right. Even though years later there have been revelations of Jack Kennedy pumped up full of meds ( however legitimate they may have been"- Broadcast or no broadcast. Kennedy clearly looked, sounded, and presented himself better.
