you mean the education provided to them from all of our tax dollars isn't enough?

..and the money would come from...who? Where? You mean the teachers pay the students?! Or the parents pay the kids?
Parents that pay for chores don't always get the chores done and there are lots of jobs available and workers still call in sick and don't want to work..so how would paying them help?
We usually pay for a service, what service are the kids providing? Certainly not to write essays. It's monitored practice.
What would be a good entry level "salary?" Would we pay the kindergartners too or only the high school students? With the absenteeism with my Jr. High kids..whose gonna do the pay roll? The teachers?!! When a kid leaves for a doctor's appointment and then returns to school, do we pay for the time he had off? Oh and how many paid sick days would they have?! Of course they would then be earning enough to pay their own income tax.. whose going to do that?
And what about the parents with 4,5,6 kids? How do they afford that when there may be only one parent?
Hope I gave you some ideas!!

In essence, a high school student IS being paid to attend school. How? Because s/he is on the "family payroll"! Parent pay (in most cases much more than they have to!) to feed, clothe, and put a roof over the child's head. What the parents expect back is for the child to repay the parent(s) by going to school, getting decent grades, and not getting into trouble. So one could say that from a parent perspective, the "job" of the child is to go to school and do well there. If the child does so s/he will not be "laid off" or worst..."fired!"

I've never thought about that but might not be a bad idea.
If they were paid to go to school, maybe they would actually go, therefore, somewhat guaranteeing that they will be an asset to our society.
On the other hand, we are already doing them a favor by giving them a free education. Why would we then pay them, giving them compensation for something that is not cheap for us to be able to do for them in the first place?
That would be an interesting essay to read.

A number of answers given before mine have already addressed the fact that students ARE paid to go to school--they receive an education, which is the payment for their time and efforts. In a similar sense, they are "paid" to take part in sports, be in a school production, or perform community service (in each case, the payment is experience and/or fun).
The question led me, in turn, to consider another--but related--issue:
Are we (by "we" I mean American society) replacing the "Work Ethic" with the "Wealth Ethic"? In other words, are we teaching our children that the only things worth doing are those that bring with them monetary (or leisure) gain?
The fact that this question is even being asked leads me to think that we are. And this is a very sad statement on American culture.

Of course NOT. High school is public education funded by the state and city to give teens the skills necessary to go out in the world to make money. A person is not paid to learn not ever or anywhere.

No, they go to school for free so they can get jobs when they are done with school. School is already free, and it is hard for the government to have enough money the way it is, where would the extra money come from to pay students?
Also, in this society, you earn money if you contribute, or work for something. Educating oneself is not a contribution to society.

We pay our children for chores or give them allowances. We provide them with clothes and food. A place to sleep. luxary items such as computer, and cars. Televisons, with cable or satalite. No we should not pay them any more than that.

I think they should. They waste alot of their life listening to someone babble on about stuff they don't wanna hear and all they get is an "education" so they can get a job and repeat the entire process until they retire and die. Maybe not paid alot, but yes pay them something.
