This is my third baby and my labors tend to go very fast. I am currently 2cm dilated and 50% effaced. I have never been induced before.

Besides pitocin, do I have any other less intense or invasive interventions I can try first while in the hospital?

Secondly, I have to go in at 6:30am. I have to have antibiotics because I am GBS positive. How long after that do they normally start inducing? This is another first for me.

Thanks for your replies.

I didn't feel I owed an explaination for my induction but my OB and I feel that it is in the best interest of my baby's health due to a complicated pregnancy. This isn't a debate over whether I should be induced or not.

I was induced just 2 months ago. I also was GBS positive. They will start an I.V. and you will probably get 2 doses of antibiotics (I.V.). They will start the pitocin while monitoring your contractions. They will slowly increase the "pit" based on your contraction pattern. Lucky for you your labors go fast....mine took 30 hours and I only dilated to 5cm. :-0 Then I ended up with a C-section. Turns out I was pregnant with a 9lb. 2oz baby!

Pitocin is the drug for induction. That is the standard for inductions today. There is a cream called "cytotec" and it helps to soften the cervix but the Dr.'s don't always use it (or find it necessary). With this being your 3rd, I don't forsee them using the cytotec.

Getting induced can take a long time----I hope it's not a marathon for you like it was for me! Although I'm still glad I got induced b/c if I would've went any longer my baby would've weighed at least 10 lbs! Good luck to you! :-)

If you are scheduled for an induction then you will have to go with the pitocin. Amniotomy is something that some hospitals use but you might ask about this before being admitted.

Just be prepared for how strong labor comes on with pitocin. It can be very intense and painful and most women will end up asking for an epidural even if they planned not to use it.

They will start the pitocin drip soon after the antibiotics.

Best of luck!

First off, congratulations :) Secondly, don't let people freak you out. I can tell you I've had 3 kids and my 1st and 3rd were induced. On a scale of 1-10 (10 being excruciating pain) my first baby was a 10 (I still remember) and my 3rd was a 2. So, if your body already knows what to do (and it does) don't focus too much on the pitocin, it should work fast fast fast.
Ask your Dr. about the answer to your second question....I'm guessing not too long, they usually like to induce early so baby comes during business hours :) Good luck!!

i was induced and they didnt give me an option for any interventions or anything but you should ask maybe they will. if you guys think that its in the best interest for you and the baby then go for it, your right its not a debate, its something your doing, and your doctor would let you if he/she didnt think it was safe... there are alot of reason for being induced other then ageing placenta or being a couple weeks over due, i was induced for low fluid...

but i think that if you have fast delieverys you wont need anything other then the pitocin, i didnt have anything other then that and i went relaly fast, so have fun, i hope your labor and delievery goes well for you, the pitocin makes the contractions more intense then if you go into labor naturally, just a little heads up hehe. but good luck and congratz on your soon to be new lil baby.

A forty percentage risk?! That's type of top, truthfully. The nearer you're in your due date (or beyond it), the greater. There may also be headaches even up till the thirty ninth week. how a ways alongside are you? If there are not clinical stipulations like pre-e or different matters occurring along with your the child, if the induction does not paintings I might request to move residence. With that top a risk for phase, I might now not desire to take my possibilities if I did not have got to. Not simplest does it double your possibilities of cesarean (for no truly intent, rather then the child is not equipped to come back but) however after getting a c-phase it may possibly difference the best way you deliver start at some point. More uterine scars may end up in extra headaches in long run pregnancies, and even though you aren't getting pregnant. Stronger Pitocin-triggered contractions can discourage the child from descending effectively, that is why specific infants 'get caught,' and too can result in extra agony for you, which raises your must get an epidural - this, in flip, may end up in larger want for an assisted supply with use of forceps, suction, and so on. that may purpose extreme tearing/episiotomy. Use of Pit too can expand fetal misery and compromise the child's oxygen deliver, that is just about a assured cesarean. I do not realize how individuals can act like a c-phase isn't any colossal deal. Just on the grounds that it is the so much events surgical procedure performed in these days doesn't suggest it is warranted, and it does now not do away with the chance elements concerned with it. I realize you may have household coming in, however except there is some thing else occurring that is wellbeing-similar, I might now not desire to place myself, or my child, by way of that.

I had gbs and was induced. they start all the IV's at the same time. I think if you get 4 hrs of the antibiotic it is enough. There is also something they can treat the baby with after birth if you don't get enough of the antibiotic. pitocin works great and my labor was only 7 hrs total from the time they started my Iv's. There is a cream they can put on your cervix too but I don't remember the name. Good Luck and Congrats!

I had cervadil, I believe, with my first to try to induce labor. They had me come in in the evening, put the gel on my cervix, had me lay there for an hour or so, sent me home and said if labor didn't start on it's own, come back in the early morning. Labor didn't start on it's own for me, so we went back and did pitocin...so long story short, you could ask about cervadil as an option before the pit!

For your second q, a friend of mine had to have the antibiotics and they administered those for 4 hours before proceeding with the induction. Don't know if that's standard or not though.
Good luck!

If you are already 2cm dilated, there's a chance you won't have to wait until Thursday to have your baby, Let's hope so!
Things may have changed slightly, but the antibiotics and pitocin used to be given one right after the other.
Good luck to you, and here's hoping all goes well for a safe delivery and a healthy baby.

When I was induced they gave me my antibiotics (in an IV) and I was told that I had to wait 6 hours to be induced to make sure the antibiotics were in my system.

I believe there is a "pill" that can be placed on the cervix that will help your cervix to soften and dilate. I just had the pitocin, and my OB broke my water...which did NOT hurt like everyone told me it was going to...I didn't even feel it.

Good luck!!

If the baby is low enough and the doctor is comfortable that the chances of prolapsed cord are very low, amniotomy may be a better alternative. It is easier on your body than pitocin (much easier!) and will likely be very effective considering this is your third and your cervix is ripe. I have been induced by amniotomy several times and I always have a baby in my arms within 2-4 hours. (Last time it took less than 2 hours!)
