I read in a car magazine on the front cover: "Wake us up for the duty-free." What on earth does that mean?

Usually, you have to pay taxes on things that you move from one country to another. If you buy something at the "duty-free" shop, you don't have to pay taxes on it.

You do not pay Taxes on what you buy because you are in a tax free zone!

If you are in Germany, you MUST pay 16% on ALL goods and services. At the airport, after you have gone thru customs, you enter into an area for travelers only! You are ready to get on to the air-plane. Shops in those area, sell items without TAXES. (Duty-Free)! You can not leave the area and go outside of the air port. You board the air craft taking your purchases with you.

it means no taxes (duty = tax) Cruise ships often have "duty-free" shops which are open once you're at sea outside of any country's territorial waters. Sometimes they have such shops in airports as well.
