You really need to slowly gauge them if you want them to be done right and you should use a taper.
If you try and push something in too big, you can tear the skin which can cause scarring and make it even more difficult and painful to gauge.
I personally have my ears at a 6. I started at 18 and went slowly to a 6 by using a taper ring. My fiance had holes bigger than a 00 and let them close up. But, he still has permanent holes in his ear and can still fit things into them like a pencil.
Check out the links below for more information about it, and how big you can go before you have permanent holes:

Just Let It Heal Itself, It Should Close Up Quite Quickly If You Haven't Had It Done For Too Long. I'd Recommend Saline Wound Wash But A Cheaper Option Would Be To Just Clean It Twice A Day With Salt Water And A Cotton Swab, It's Just As Effective! Good Luck =]

Well BMEzine has lots of articles.
Ear holes are stretchy. You were likely pierced at 18G or maybe 16G, but 14 gauge are quite a bit larger. I wouldn't risk it--you might get a blow-out. Ears do shrink back but if you keep wearing them, the hole will be permanently stretched.

So basically you want to gauge your ears? Unfortuantly once you do it, your stuck with it. Its not gonna be very noticable, but your not gonna be able to wear regular earrings anymore.. I would sugguest not doing this tho. If you want the look of gauges earholes, look on ebay for fake gauge earrings. They sell some that go in like a regular earring and they are the reg earring gauge but they look like your ears are gauged. I know that if you were to gauge your ears and stretch them out large, there are plastic surgeons that will sew them back together, but its not worth it. Go with the fake ones...good luck

You need a taper and lube to stretch the peircing to 14ga. 14 isn't much bigger than 'normal' piercing size (usually 18 ga) and yes, if you leave jewelry out, they will shrink back.
www.bmezine.com is probably your best bet, look in the encyclopedia
