Will it add performance? And how bad will the sound be dont want it that loud.

A classic example of a "flow thru" muffler as you say would be the classic Glass Pack.
It's basicaly a straight pipe packed with fiberglass held in place by a perforated inner sleeve.

They are are a bit louder than a standard muffler and are generaly used on offroad vehicles, and Hotrods.

They are illegal in some states.

It will add performance but it will make your car louder. Additionally, it will be the equivalent of putting an air dam on a Gremlin.
