There are two people I know on the leaderboard who actually made the leaderboard based on the single fact that they truly give the best answers.

Absolutely! Take the case of $m☼r฿ for instance. In spite of his claims, I did a little checking. Most or all of his best answer votes come from a network of people. If you don't believe me just check out his best answers. First you will find that a whole slew and a half of his "best answer votes" come from a user called "Decadence ". This is not so bad but $m☼r฿, almost all of your best voters are linked by 360. Before you go making claims, make sure that you don't leave tracks that can be traced back to you.

Yes I would say that the people in the lead get help from their "friends" But it doesn't matter anyway. You get no benefit from being first on here. Just the fun of reading and answering. By and large I think you will find that most people are honest. Just enjoy and forget the abusers.

The supposition that people amass large numbers of BAs by some sort of point gaming is, at least in my own case, a complete falsehood. I have 1200+ Best Answers because I have answered a lot of questions and given good answers, at least in the opinion of the many askers from whom those BAs came. To the extent that a certain percentage of those BAs come from certain people, it is because I particularly enjoy their questions and answer them often, and because they like my answers. That's what the Contact lists are for, after all.

That being said, I don't know why it's such a big concern anyway...other than the few minor privileges that come with getting to the upper "levels," points don't really serve any purpose.

Try this. Pick several of those people, then look at the people that picked them best answer. Check the time that each joined YA. Do this with a few. See if you notice a pattern.

I think they vote for themselves when the question person doesn't pick a best answer. Or they have ALOT of time on their hands.

They are probably know it alls, the types of people who have done everything but never left their computers!!!
What do you actually get anyway for getting "best answer" except 10 points? Is it redeemable for cash?
