The best-known Roman scientist was Pliny the Elder, who wrote a book "De Rerum Naturae" (About the Nature of Things). He died in the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD because he was too interested in the details of the spectacle to flee to safety. His nephew Pliny the Younger also showed some interest in scientific matters.
