How do you fix the pull cord on a push lawn mower? Actually, it needs replaced. Is this a task that you can do yourself or does it need taken into be serviced by a lawn mower technician? The pull cord frayed cause I think I must have put the top protector part on it crocked. (I KNOW, wasn't a brilliant move). It caused a shrearing type of effect. Now the cord won't retract. Thanks, Kimmie~

Take the cover off where it winds up, take it to a hardware store and im sure they make you a new one. And then put it back together. Its not rocket science, i know you can do it.

Sounds like your valves are frozen shut. An internal combustion engine is like an air pump. When it's running, it sucks air in through the intake manifold and the piston pumps it out through the exhaust. If the valves aren't opening, the air in the cylinder can't escape. This would prevent the motor from turning with just the little bit of torque provided by the pull cord. When you take out the spark plug, air is allowed in and out of the cylinder, allowing the engine to turn freely.

You will have to remove the starter assembly from the motor. Remove the old cord from the starter. Pay attention to how it was routed, tied and the length. Install the new cord. Now you will have to pretension the spring by turning the cord and the pulley it goes on. Without letting it go, put the cord through the handle and tie a knot. Reinstall the assembly on the motor.

If the cord is still intact, all you need is to reinstall a handle (depending on how much is left. ) a replacement cord is only about $4.

You may have to open the recoil mechanism to get to the cord. don't lose any springs.

If you search the web you may be able to find a repair manual in PDF format. I found one from my Vertical Techumseh engine.
