Antonin Scalia is a conservative in that he believes in a standard of strict constructionism in relation to the Constitution. This means a literal reading which does not allow for gross extrapolation of meaning and writing law that violates the constitution.
Compare this to Ruth Bader Ginsberg, who has said she thinks that the Supreme court should look to European law to gleen how our own legal system should be run.
Without a strong constitution, our law could move in ANY direction, left or right, and the result would be legal chaos.
