oMG i have been working my butt off on this stupid question for 3 freaking hours and i need to know what the value of x is and how you got it ... step by step

Ok, step 1: take a deep breath, walk around the room for a bit, punch a pillow, stretch - whatever it takes to relax. Think calm thoughts.
Step 2: tell yourself, no, better yet, CONVINCE yourself that you can do this. Almost always, the only thing holding people back is the belief that "math is hard". It's not hard at all. Really.

You can't go on to step 3 until you believe me. Math is not hard. Say it after me. Repeat until you're convinced. :)
Step 3: Now you may actually look at the problem.
We have
[x + stuff] = [other stuff + 2x]
What we want is
x = [stuff]
So, let's move the [stuff] to one side of the equals sign. It really doesn't matter which side you move where, just pick one. I think I'll move the 2.7 from the left to the right. To do that, I look at whether 2.7 is positive or negative on the side it's currently on. If it's positive, I subtract it from both sides; if it's negative, I add it to both sides.
x - 2.7 + 2.7 = -2.0 + 2x + 2.7
Simplified, that becomes:
x = 0.7 + 2x
Well, that's x = [stuff], but the [stuff] still has an x in it, so we're not done. Let's move the 2x from the right to the left. Again, we look at its sign (no, not the astrological one, the mathematical one) and use the reverse on both sides:
x - 2x = 0.7 + 2x - 2x
-x = 0.7
(There's a bit of mathematical shorthand here: we went straight from x - 2x to -x, when what really happens is x - 2x = x*(1-2) [distributive property] = x * (-1) = -x. Same thing goes for 2x - 2x, but that's so obvious that invoking the distributive law just confuses matters.)
Ok, so we know what -1 times x equals. We want the opposite, so we multiply both sides by -1 (because a minus times a minus equals a plus):
-x * -1 = 0.7 * -1
x = -0.7
And we're done. See, that wasn't hard at all.

Sometimes it helps to put a 1 in front of the x because x alone =1.
1x - 2.7 = -2.0 + 2x first subtract the x from both sides
-2.7=-2.0+1x next add the -2.0 to each side
-.7=x

move 2x to the left and 2.7 to the right
-2x + x = -2.0 + 2.7
(when you move them you have to change the sign)
simplify
-x = 0.7
move the negative to the other side
and the answer is x = -0.7
when you plug in the value of x the the values are equal
-.07 - 2.7 = -2.0 + 2(-.07)
-3.4 = -2.0 - 1.4
-3.4 = -3.4

Clarise, this is like falling off a log. You have to put your x's on one side and your constants on the other side. So,, lets be sneaky and subtract x from both sides. We have 0 x on the left and 1x on the right. Now, add 2.0 to both sides, and we have -0.7 on the left and 0 on the right. We dont have to worry about 0 x and 0 further, so what do we have left? Hmmmmmm. -0.7 = 1x
So what does x (alias 1x) equal? Hmmmmm

No need to freak.
x - 2.7 = -2.0 + 2x
You need to get all the x's on one side, and all the other numbers on the opposite side.
Add 2.0 to both sides.
x - 2.7 + 2.0 = -2.0 + 2x + 2.0
x - 0.7 = 2x
Now subtract 1x from both sides.
x - 0.7 - x = 2x - x
-0.7 = x
That's your answer.

add 2.7 to 2.0 and get x=.7+2x and then subtract 2x from both sides and since you would get -x=.7 multiply both sides by negative 1 and u get x=-.7

x -.7 = 2x
-x -x
-.7=x
Its been a long time since a algebra class but I checked my work twice!

ok first you subtract the x to both sides.
so its -2.7=-2.0+2x-x simplify to -2.7+-2.0+x
then you +2.0 to both sides.
you get -.7=x
that is x
