Use the fuel that has the octane rating recommended by the manufacturer. If, for example, your car is designed for 87 octane, then that is all you need to use. There is absolutely NO benefit in using a higher octane (aka premium) fuel. Shell "V" power is a quality fuel that has additional additives over and above some of the other brands, but its octane rating is the same.

Premium gasoline is actually unleaded gasoline. Unleaded is different from diesel fuel, and there are usually 3 types of unleaded fuel that are offered at gas stations. Premium gasoline is the most expensive of the unleaded fuels because it has a high octane level. Usually, people who are maniacs about their cars, like people who have really nice and expensive cars, are the only ones who use premium fuel (since it is the best gasoline for your engine). The lowest octane level, called "Regular" is what I use with my car. It is the cheapest, and is usually the price per gallon that the gas station advertises on its sign. It might be slightly worse for your engine, but the majority of drivers use the lowest octane "regular" unleaded fuel. Hope this helps!

The compression ratio of the engine is a key to resolving this question.
In the case of some car makers, they produce more horsepower by increasing the cylinder compression, either by engine design or by adding supercharging and/or turbocharging.
The vast majority of current cars and trucks on the road today have no need whatsoever for premium fuel. Only high output engines really need the extra octane found in such fuels.

they are all unleaded now, but premium is a grade like poor and unleaded is different from leaded.
unlike the old days I used to mix premium & regular togather, mixing unleaded and unleaded together is the same...its still premium & regular and intermediate lines of unleaded.

octane measures pressure needed for combustion.High compression engines need premium.Otherwise it's a waste of money.
