First do the multiplications to get rid of the parentheses. Then get the x-values on the left side by adding or subtracting (as needed) from each side of the equation. Do the same to get all the constants on the right side. Divide both sides by the multiplier of X to get an equation of x=(whatever)

8x - 5 ( x - 1) = 20
8x - 5x + 5 = 20
3x + 5 = 20
3x = 15
x = 5

4 ( 2x - 1 ) = 2x + 35
8x - 4 = 2x + 35
8x = 2x + 39
6x = 39
x = 39 / 6

7 ( x - 2 ) = 5 ( x + 4 )
7x - 14 = 5x + 20
7x = 5x + 34
2x = 34
x = 17

I could be wrong though.
