i had an interview for government job. i prepared everything i could and tried hard..and i thought the interview went well..but i didnt get the job..

the only thing i can think that i did wrong is: when i just went into the room, i didnt get the chitchat that the interviewer said to me, since she had a very strong accent.

another thing is.. i had the wrong eye contact...i had more eye contact with one interviewer,,,but too little with other twos who actually have the final say..

sigh...how stupid i am.. i feel discouraged...sorry for the babbling..

You may be right, but maybe not. It may have bee a very close call. Maybe someone knew someone.

Here are some things you can do:

Team up with a group friends or other people looking for jobs and participate in practice interviews. Have them provide feedback... You will learn to relax, practice the chit chat, and receive a more objective appraisal of your interview skills.

Contact the people who interviewed you and ask them what you could have done better... also, be sure to thank them for their time. Also, it is ok to let them know you are disappointed and might like to work for them in the future... it's amazing how many new hires don't make it through the first year.

Good luck!

Keep applying
The other applicants may have had specific factual advantages

However I think I've also read that the recruiter's opinion after the first half minute or so of a job interview is like more than 3/4 predictive of outcome thus if you have the opportunity visit the workplace anonymously first then dress like whoever looks most competent You could even ask "aside from you, who is thought to be doing an effective job here"

Its also just numbers go on more interviews get more opportunity

remember as the person says Ahh! Another one that is too smart to work for the government

Might I encourage you to think of this as a blessing. that will attract the right job for you even quicker. Imagine that it was so not the right job for you (which hindsight woul dhave proven). Take away your lessons from the interview, which will help you to snag that perfect job for you. Who knows, that perfect job might lead you to your group of soulmates that will change your world.

tak a deep breath and release your "attachment" to this outcome. Call it (aloud) a blessing that things worked out this way, and call in your perfect job immediately.

Write down all the things that you can see yourself having in your perfect job

A boss who respects you, colleagues who work well with you and whom you respect. The perfect amount of money for you, good location. Write them as though you have them (not that you want them.) ie - I now am working at a ...., doign something ... that I love. My colleagues are great, and the money is amazing, over $... a week. I love what I do and get up every day keen to work. I am worthy of this and it is my passion which makes me perfect for it.......

etc etc. Give much thanks.

Let me know how quickly you create this. I will be intrigued to see if you have that opportunity before the week is out.

Go for it. You have nothing to lose and heaps to gain.

Don't worry about it. It's possible that none of the reasons you described even apply. Often government jobs are "open competition" but actually aren't--it's possible someone already working there got your position. I know this from personal experience.

Just try better next time.. I know how disappointing it can be. It's a learning curve, right? I'm sure you'll have luck at another position.

Those multiple interviews are quite intimidating. Dont beat yourself up about it. It may not have been for you. I am pretty sure there is another job waiting for you that is much better than the job you applied for. Just keep trying and keep your head up!

Someone else was better qualified, a friend of the manager, a relative of the manager, already worked for the company, had a higher college degree than yours, etc. Of course, there's always the chance that it was a male vs female, black vs white, etc. thing. There are, unfortunately, quotas to fill.

The pre-interview chit-chat is just as much a part of the interview as the rest.

But in your case, they probably interviewed multiple candidates. Someone else did better.

Better luck to you next time.
