Okay, so I have a project to do for my social studies class and after about an hour of searching I have finally found a useful picture of a U.S. army uniform during the time of the Indian Wars (Custer's Last Stand, Seventh Cavalry 1870s-ish). I was wondering if anyone knew where I could find a list or a website or a good book that would have the supplies that soldiers during that time used. I need like the guns, food, shelter, and other supplies that a typical soldier or group of soldiers would take with them into battle. If you know of something like this I would appreciate it sooo much. thanks.

~The Indian wars started in 1585 at Roanoke and continued through Wounded Knee in 1890. The wars escalated drastically with Andy Jackson and the Seminoles , the Indian Relocation Act of 1830, and later, with Miles and Sheridan out west. The armament changed radically throughout this period. Be more specific in your search. A couple correct key words and you'll have more pictures and information than you can handle.

I don't have a website, but here is some of what I know: Two of the three forces converging on the Lakoka/Cheyenne (Gibbon and Custer) were supplied by steamboat up the Missouri as far as it was navigable. There was a third, led by Crook, supplied overland, but it had been repulsed on the Rosebud, and badly, before the Little Bighorn.

The infantry carried 1873 model .45/70 Springfield single-shot trapdoor rifles, but Custer's people had the carbine model (.45/50). Both still used copper cartridges, which tended to expand so much against the chamber after rapid repeated use that the extractor would simply pull the head off the spent cartridge.

No one can say for sure exactly what happened to the five companies with Custer who charged the huge village, but a lot of broken pocket knives were found on the field later, evidence that troopers were trying desperately to extract the rest of the casing, so they could reload.

There are so many good books on the subject that I don't know which to recommend.

1876, June 25Th Custer died. his men carried 45/70 caliber Creedmoor rolling block rifle. single shot slow loading. most carried about 25 rounds of ammo others more standard was 25+ along with resupply on pack animals. the Sioux had a few rifles bow and arrows and pistols lances, clubs etc. the army of that day was very lax each man was responsible for his equipment but some men carried little ammo or food, the army only required 2 practice shots per year. though most were hunters or other and could be presumed to shoot well. army policy was lax past WW!.
