2001 Volvo S40 1.9t. Slow to start up for a while until this morning when the engine wouldn't even turn over. Just heard a rapid clicking noise (lights and stereo worked). Jumped the car and it ran fine, turned it off and it would not start back up. Put in a new battery, car started up but still slow. Now (with new battery) car starts right away sometimes and slow other times. Car is tuned up regularly and was last tuned in JAN '07. What could be the cause of the starting problems?

Had a new stereo system put in by Circuit City a few months ago, could that be draining the battery?

sounds like your starter is starting to go, it's dragging sometimes, go to autozone and have the charging system checked out first before you replace the starter to make sure it's not the alternator not charging the battery.

It appears like a charging concern that would or won't be the alternator. Your volvo is gasoline injected and the ECM/ecu demands a minimum of 6 volts to sign up alerts from the engines sensors. with out charging gadget operation, the motor vehicle will ony run on the battery until it drops to six volts. The voltage will drop swifter the extra upload-ons that are making use of voltage. a pair tests would be accomplished to be confident if this is the alternator or means going to the sector circuit of the alternator. the sector circuit is important because of the fact it energizes the alternator, with out it the alternator output could be 0. making use of a voltmeter or attempt easy verify for means on the alternator considerable terminal, this is a stud and nut with a pink cord. i do no longer remember precisely which cord is the sector, in spite of the undeniable fact that it will be a smaller cord plug-in with a minimum of two wires. a style of is the sector. turn the considerable on and attempt for means at a style of wires. If no means is present the priority is extra effective up the charging circuit. probably a burnt fusible link placed on the starter considerable terminal. turn the considerable off. If means is present, the priority is likely the alternator. that's suitable examined with a voltmeter. attempt battery voltage, 12.6 volts DC. shop the attempt leads on the battery and have somebody crank the engine and attempt to start it. Battery voltage shouldn't drop below 8 volts DC, if it does the battery has a foul cellular. as quickly as the engine starts battery voltage could leap as much as 13.4-14.8 volts, and slowly shrink. If the alternator isn't charging, battery voltage will proceed to drop below 12 volts. wish this enables in diagnosing the priority. reliable success. Christopher

Circuit City could be the culprit. Someone need to put an amp meter on the battery lead to see if anything is drawing current from it.
