Some people try to keep these in freshwater as juveniles, but they'll do much better in a brackish tank. By the time they're adults, they should be up to almost full strength seawater.

If you're looking to get one, I'd say to ask what the conditions are in the tank you're buying it from and match this at the very least. Over time, though, you should increase the salt. These fish are aggressive, so they shouldn't be kept with others.

he can live for more than 2 years in fresh water however you may be in for more problems and headaches. They really need to be in brackish then full salt by the time they are adults. Keeping a saltwater fish in a fresh water situation begins to deteriorate a few of the internal organs of the fish. mostly their ability to absorb and use freshwater effeciently.

I agree with copperhead, what ever water he was in at the store, that is what you start him in then gradually (over weeks and waterchanges) slowly increase the salinity. You will enjoy a healthy and happier fish more.

Good luck
