I think theres a numer of factors contributing.

Firstly unfairness in society and general injustice, since a common thread of these school killers seems to be killing the prom queen and the jocks.. and in this V Tech case, he actually wrote it in his suicide note, that he hated rich kids and debauchery.. so for one you've got a mixed society, where the poor often live by very strict rules.. and the rich get away with grand theft (ie Enron).. this is a spark for some..

Secondly.. and perhaps most significantly since injustices happen globally and not just USA .. is that USA makes it easy to get weapons!

Mix the two together.. and young impressionable immature and depressed minds.. become capable of mass murder!!

There seems ot be a general concensus that small misjustices are in themselves meaningless.. but small injustices as a whole.. are catstrophic.. USA has to accept this new dimension of the catastrophy.. until it can makes society a fair place to be.. these things will continue to happen.. its a tragedy because it exposes that all of America is unsafe.. and the Gun Lobby is STILL in total denial.. their response has been to promote more guns.. the National Gun Lobby actually came out and said.. if all the student had guns this would not have happened..

OH BROTHER!!!!

There are a lot of reasons people do these things, I'm sure. But, the sad fact is that we never know, in most instances, the real reason, because the murderer is either killed by the police or kills himself. It does seem to be a male dominated phenomenon, however. If I'm not mistaken, all, or almost all, of the violence committed at schools are by males. Most of them are outsiders, geeks or loners - or all three. I think there should be new laws put into effect that allows teachers or others in authority to insist that a student get help when they notice abnormal behavior. However, this would not help unless the person wanted help - kind of like sending a druggie to rehab doesn't help unless they want it to. There are no simple answers, only many, many complex questions.

It is truly sad that this young man had to commit this terrible act. It was obviously pre-meditated according to the long note he left behind. Maybe he was just pushed over the edge one too many times. And why did he pick the engineering building? It is sad for everyone. We must learn to better understand and appreciate each other so things like this don't happen again. But the sad thing is it probably will. Peace to all.

i dont know that i would go as far as to say they are becoming frequent, i can think of 3 in the last 10 years, one of which wasnt even a student...

as far as the most recent one i believe there was something seriously wrong with that man and he just lost it. reports say that (he was an english major) all of the papers he did for school wrote about very explicit things and some of his teachers even reccomended him for counselling. but the reason he went over the edge and brought a gun...well could have been a number of reasons, some people believe it had something to do with a break up, but its still unclear.

with columbine, it was all about bullying and i believe that plays a huge roll in what is going on in schools today. those 2 boys had been bullied and pushed around to the point where they were ready to kill themselves and decided why not take other students with them. in occurances like this i believe this can be prevented and people just need to watch how they treat others.

but with Vtech we cant say what could have lead him to commit such a crime as he did, he left no suicide note, and witnesses said he showed no emotion.

what causes people to do things like this is all in their head... but i do agree schools need to pay better attention to their students to prevent this from happening again

The worst part of this whole nightmare that we are experiencing, is that the access to guns is so easy, that anybody can get one. Too many shoot em up video games, too much violence on TV, and the Movies, too much violence on the Internet, puts ideas into these young minds, and if they are hurting, and no body cares, they go to extremes to prove themselves, and the gun is easy to do that, all you have to do is pull the trigger. Look at Japan, they have no guns, except for the police, and you will not see killings happen over there. If you look at the countries that do not sell guns, you will see that there is no mass murders. I truly am saddened, by this horrible act of murder, and when will we all, wake up?

See, kids nowadays, have much more stress to deal with. In school, people focus on popularity and such. I suppose it's a good thing I'm not too interested in popularity... Anyway...

People now have somewhat an easier access to firearms. Those who are of age can buy themselves one legally. Those who aren't of age can buy themselves one illegally, or steal one.

See, the brain works in different ways. Those who cannot differentiate reality from fantasy will be absorbed into the violence in games and movies so much. Those who have too much stress on their hands and think they have no way to release it, let their rage out.

Because ... guns are everywhere! Guns are in the movies! Guns are cool!

And now that we have all these cool murderer role-models splashed all over the news, people are gonna realize how easy it is to pull off such a horrific feat.

It is a huge shift in what a psychologist would call environmental influence. I think that none of these things are to blame solely but all together this is the cause. I think video games and movies have gotten more and more graphic which desensitizes us to killing and death and violence. In some homes movies and games keep children quiet so parents can think and have time to themselves. I also think that as we go round and round about abortions and further from the belief that every life has a purpose. We lose some of the sanctity of human life. I also think that each individuals parents are partially responsible for teaching and raising someone to value human life. I think these and others are the cause for not only mass murders but also suicide if we teach babys are worthless and to be used for experimentation and research instead of a productive life given from GOD then culturally we loose the value of LIFE.

Song: Come and Get Me
"Artist": Timbaland & 50 Cent

Bigger shields to fit in that banana clip jack
Run in the bulls eye, form on your back
Hard to miss with a full clip in the Mac
I got Ammo! Ammo!
Eye low, reload!

... just one example. Guns are everywhere, and like someone else in this thread said, guns are cool.

Are you saying that only Americans will know the answer?
If Americans, as you say, did know the answer, then maybe they could do something to prevent school shootings.
Anyone in the world could give you the same answer: Violence.
Americans grow up seeing violence in their homes, in their cartoons, video games, school, etc. It's just something that keeps on growing, that turns into hatred.
