I got great advice on how to unclog the duct and have been working all day with warm compresses, pumping, changing nursing positions and so on. Now I woudl like to know...how long before this duct will unclog? Any advice would be appreciated.

It's hard to judge. It could be hours, it could be a day or more.

However if you see a pearly white lump (small) coming out of your nipple you should pull it out with tweezers. This is probably the lump (usually just coagulated fat). Leaving it in will make it hurt longer. I know I almost passed out when someone told me to pop it with a pin. I found just gently pulling it out while expressing helped more.

This is some good info, though I am sure someone already linked to it:http://www.kellymom.com/bf/concerns/mom/mastitis.html

BTW for me the cause was sleeping in underwire bras. Underwire was fine during the day but laying on my side at night while nursing put pressure and blocked some ducts. Once I switched to sleeping bras at night I was fine.

i had the same thing going on with me when i was breastfeeding, and i had to got to the doctor and get it massaged out, it was the most painful thing ever:( so if i were you i would keep up with the hot compresses and see if you can feel the little duct that's clogged, it will feel like a little ball like the size of a pea and try to work it out by massaging it in a circular motion. your milk will start to leak out but just let it and do this in between the hot compresses. another thing about the hot compresses is to make it as hot as you can handle and put it on with a barrier like a sheet or towel and leave it on for 20 mins and then off for 20 mins. hope this helps you. be careful and go to the doctor if you start to see red blood vessels coming to the surface and you get a fever. this could be mastitus and is dangerous to you

For me, they lasted anywhere from a day up to 2-3 days. But, the pain gets better each day, so you will know that it is getting better. I also agree about the underwire bra--I often got a plugged duct when wearing an underwire for the first 6 months. Now, I seem to be OK wearing them again. Best wishes!

I wish I could give you good news, but I have a duct that has been clogged since my first pregnancy (9 years ago) and is still clogged. It may or may not go down. If it is really inflamed, you may get it to reduce, but it may never completely go away. Apparently, though you can have them surgically removed if they are causing a huge problem. I hope it works out for you.

I additionally think of your physician advised you to bounce into solids thank you to quickly. considering that breast milk may be the considerable area of your infant's weight loss plan to a minimum of 12 months it makes extra sense to start extra slowly. I basically began with one meal an afternoon then added a meal a month until my son substitute into getting 3 foodstuff an afternoon. I by no ability experienced any engorgement this style. i'm able to't think of that it will final extra effective than a week or so yet i might relatively reassess how plenty you're feeding. while weaning is complete good you may no longer journey soreness or engorgement in any respect.
