Has anyone ever noticed that every planet in our solar system has a name for their moon(s) but Earth doesn't.
So why don't we have a name for your moon?

We do it is called Luna but "The Moon" makes it sound more important.

It has been Luna for many years. The myth is that during full moons the emergency rooms are the busiest. Seems like Luna in full moon brings out the Lunatics. So I decided to check this out, and sure enough, they are. In older days it was old wives tale that those that stare at Luna to long would go crazy. Become a Lunatic.

Also most births and labor rooms are the busiest during full moon, or Luna.

The Moon is called many things from different mythologies. For example, Luna by the Romans, Selene by the Greeks. Because the Moon is so obvious it has been known since prehistoric times, so tracing its name is difficult. It developed with different languages rather than being chosen conciously.

The moons around other planets are collectively called moons as they hold the same position relative to their planet as The Moon does to ours - ie. they are named after the Moon. However in order to distinguish between them they also have individual names. The first moons to be discovered around another planet where the 4 largest moons of Jupiter discovered in 1609 by Galilleo Galillei so I suppose we can blame him for calling them moons! Names were then decided for them, unlike objects which have been known since prehistoric times whose names develop with a culture and language.

The Greeks called it Selene, from which the Latins got Luna (they dropped the first syllable). However, astronomers rarely use anything other than Moon (with a capital M). One day, I jokingly proposed that since our sun is called Sun and our moon is called Moon, then our own planet should be called Planet. Names of planets come from Greek mythology, although we have adopted the Latinized version of the names of the Greek gods for which they were named: Helios = Appolo (Sun-god) Hermes = Mercury Aphrodite = Venus Gaia = Terra Selene = Luna Ares = Mars Zeus = Jupiter Chronos = Saturn Names of satellites were taken from Greek mythology (except for the satellites of Uranus, taken from English litterature). We got stuck with "Moon", which gives us "month" (the period taken for the Moon to go through its phases). If we were to "rename" the Moon, I think we should follow tradition (the Latinized name of the associated Greek goddess) and use Luna.

It's name in English is "The Moon". It was called this before satellites of other planets were ever observed. When they were first observed, they would eventually be referred to as "moons" becuase they orbited the other planets like the Moon does orbit Earth. As such, the name of our natural satellite became a generic name for all such satellites.

So, it is not that our moon has no name, it is that other satellites are called "moons" becuase they are like our own, which is called the Moon.

Moon is based off of Lunar, it is a very old name for the moon.
Other Moon (satelites ) have special names because they are named after gods and people. Hope that helps!
