My grandmother.
She was born in a tar-paper shack during the depression and came of age during World War II. For that reason, she was always much more independent than her daughter's (my mother's) generation. When my mother was trying to train me to be a fundie obedient "good girl," my grandmother, who loved the hippies, encouraged me to be myself.
My grandfather passed away this year, and she sold their house and bought a little farm in the middle of Kansas. She has a collection of chickens, which she incubates and hatches herself. The little chicks stay in the guest bedroom until they are ready to hatch. She also has a horse, 2 dogs, and a chinchilla. (Yes, she's almost 80!! She could probably still take me in a fight ... )
When I was young, I remember catching tadpoles in the pond. We'd put them in her (expensive) Victorian birdbath, and she'd let the water get all moldy and mucky so we could watch them turn into frogs.
She's also a nudist. She sponsored a college exchange student a few months ago, and she said, "You know, Peter was such a nice young man. He was a lovely house guest. I'm so glad he's gone, though. Sometimes you just HAVE to walk around naked, and at MY age, no one wants to see that!"

My Great Grandmother was a Major role model in my life. She overcame growing up in an abusive home. She road motorcycles and won dance competitions in speakeasies in the 1920's. She taught herself how to swim in the Pacific ocean. She was a pillar of virtue and never let anyone tell her she couldn't do anything. She could make any type of clothing without so much as a pattern. She was self sufficient and always took care of herself. She worked until she was 82 as a seamstress and loved her job. She was wise and always had an ear too listen with. She was not afraid to take charge and take chances an held our family together. She only had a 3rd grade education yet she was so educated and made very well for herself. She had so much to give and so many stories. She was a shining star in this world.

Like so many, I came from a family...shall we say...less than perfect! I didn't have a clue about so many things...how to take care of a home, how to raise children, how to treat a man..etc.
When I met Nancy, went to her home and observed how she was, it was a real an education. Her home was lovely, very clean and homey. She was pretty, neatly dressed and such a lady! She loved to bake, fix delicious meals for her guy. Her small daughter was loved, read to and tucked in every night! Nancy made everything feel, well, just great!
I had many opportunities to visit and since we were fairly close in age, I copied her, a lot. I aspired to live this same life, and did!
This made such an impact on me that I can honestly say, it changed my life...the life of my two sons and the life of my husband!
Now, my sons are touching others in such positive ways!!
One person can make a difference in many lives!
Thanks, Nancy!

Tyra Banks. She's goal oriented, single and motivated in her life. That's how I want to be. She's crazy, and has the most bubbly personality. Plus, she's black, that's a plus for me, because she's different. And I like to be different.
