Got any old puzzles around? Glue puzzle pieces around the frame covering the fronts of the frames. Add two or more layers and cover with clear gloss. I have also used old jewelry broken down into parts, beads and even spray painted sticks from the yard.

take a bunch of different colored yarn and remove the glass from the frame and wrap the yarn around the frame, you can do it tight so all you see is the yarn or loose so you see the white part too, use a good glue to secure either end of the yarn on the backside of the frame.
You can even thread on buttons or beads before you wrap it on. looks really cool.

I take different colored tissue paper, rip it up in small pieces and paint them on with glue. I mix some water in with the glue to make it thinner and so it doesn't get gloppy. I then just use a paint brush, put some glue on the frame, put the tissue piece on and cover it with more glue. You can do any colors your want and tissue paper is cheap!

I like people who look at plain things and try to envision something unusual.
I like to take ink stamp pads in gold or other colors, and brush them against the frame so the highest parts pick up the color. It makes it look antique.

Seashells, tiny rocks, or for a pic of a sewer - buttons.
Decoupage pretty pictures of flowers, birds, butterflies, or anything that catches your eye, or apples, crayons, or toys for a child's frame.
